Als Sigfried Giedion im Jahre 1929 seine kleine Schrift "Befreites Wohnen" publizierte, befand sich die klassische moderne Architektur auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer kreativen Entwicklung. Was im Zeitraum von 1927 bis 1932 vor allem in Europa geplant und realisiert wurde, revolutionierte sowohl die Bautechnik, das räumliche Denken und die Bauästhetik als auch konventionelle Wohnkonzepte. Le Corbusier, Theo van Doesburg, Mies van der Rohe und andere Mitstreiter der Avantgarde unternahmen faszinierende Versuche des Neuen Bauens, die zwar damals heftig umstritten waren, heutzutage wegen ihrer innovativen Kraft und gestalterischen Qualität aber bewundert werden. - Das vorliegende Buch wendet sich dem kulturellen Phänomen der "Befreiung" zu. In eindrücklichen zeitgenössischen Textzitaten aus den zahlreich hierzu veröffentlichten Publikationen sowie anhand illustrierender Abbildungen, in denen sich die begeisterte Dynamik der Architekten, Künstler und Schriftsteller jener Jahre mal wissenschaftlich, mal pathetisch und nicht selten auch amüsant widerspiegelt, vermittelt sich das Bild einer fundamentalen Komponente dieser Periode. "Befreiung" im allgemeinen Sinne sollte auf dem Wege einer baulichen Öffnung des traditionellen Hauses, mittels sinnlicher und intellektueller Sensibilisierung des Bewohners erreicht werden. Man wollte eine neue Architektur und einen "Neuen Menschen" erzeugen und baute das Stelzenhaus, installierte die versenkbare Glaswand oder setzte eine Dusche auf das Dach. - - Spannende Bezüge von Lebensutopien, Kunsttheorien und zeittypischer Rationalität werden dabei sichtbar. Im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung stehen dabei vorrangig die Villen und Einzelhäuser dieser Architektengeneration - von den bekannten Beispielen bis hin zu einer überraschenden Vielzahl selten behandelter oder unbekannter Entwürfe.

Editorship Elisabeth Blum, Jesko Fezer, Günther Fischer, Angelika Schnell Not unjustly referred to as legendary, this series of books on the history and theory of architecture and urban development was founded in 1963 by Ulrich Conrads, who was joined by Peter Neitzke as a co-editor of the series in the early 1980s. Now numbering over 150 titles, it is the most comprehensive German-language book series covering these fields. Following the deaths of the two longtime editors Ulrich Conrads (2013) and Peter Neitzke (2015), a new editorial committee was formed to continue their work: Elisabeth Blum, Jesko Fezer, Günther Fischer and Angelika Schnell. As the future editors of this series, it is our aim to maintain the course set by our forerunners. The series has fulfilled its original aim of taking stock of the constructional and urban planning ideas and realizations formulated and achieved over the twentieth century in exemplary fashion. The Bauwelt Fundament series actually represents a history of ideas in the fields of planning and building that extends from the beginning of the twentieth century into the present. The second objective of the series, one that is anchored in its very name, will also continue to guide the development of the series, namely the publication of foundational thought - authoritative and fundamental - rather than passing opinion, of theses and polemics relating to the burning architectural and urban planning themes of the time. Penetrating complex interrelationships and probing them with systematic analysis provides the prerequisite for fruitful discourse and ongoing debate. As a forum for such discourses and contributions, the Bauwelt Fundamente series is maintaining its focus on the areas of architecture and urbanism, supplementing it with the always necessary historical investigation of important questions and texts and its extension into other cultural and social fields. A strong international orientation and the desire for more female authors are self-evident in such a context. The original graphic design approach taken by Helmut Lortz to the series is being maintained. As is fitting for a working library, Bauwelt Fundamente titles remain simply designed, using black and white for the logo, the images on the front and back, and the eleven-line summary of the volume's contents. This is indicative of the broad orientation of Bauwelt Fundamente to all those interested in the cultural and social development that provides the context for the creation of cities, houses and other objects, which in turn create contexts for the world. The image of open working and living spaces flooded with light has, more than any other, become fixed in our minds as a symbol of modernity and the spirit of the times. Ausgangspunkt der vorliegenden Studie ist ein zentrales Paradox des kommunikativen Fremdsprachenunterrichts: Das Lernziel der kommunikativen Kompetenz ist ein Ideal geblieben, meist entwickelt sich nur eine Minderheit schulischer Fremdsprachenlerner zu engagiert in eigener Sache Kommunizierenden, zu kompetenten und konversationell flexiblen Sprechern. Diese negative Bilanz wird im theoretischen Teil unter zwei sich ergänzenden Gesichtspunkten hinterfragt: dem der Interaktion und dem der Kognition. Zum einen ist die starre schulische Gesprächslogik mit ihren vorhersehbaren Abläufen dem Spracherwerb nicht gerade förderlich, zum andern werden im gesteuerten Fremdsprachenunterricht die Regelhaftigkeiten kognitiver Selbstorganisation und die Erkenntnisse der Zweitsprachenerwerbsforschung systematisch außer Acht gelassen. In den Praxisteilen werden schrittweise aufbauende Modelle eines aisthetisch-ästhetisch orientierten Fremdsprachenunterrichts vorgestellt: Es sind Übungen und Experimente zur visual literacy, zur Gehörsensibilisierung und zur Theaterarbeit; sie erlauben ein entwicklungsproximales Vorgehen und stimulieren die natürlichen Erwerbsmechanismen. So wird die Kreativität des Fremdsprachlers zu einer Ressource, die nicht nur dem eigenen Lernen zugute kommt, sondern der kulturerzeugenden Dynamik insgesamt. Es entsteht eine Kommunikationskultur sui generis, die erst die Bedingungen für Kommunikation schafft: Nähe, Kooperation, Solidarität.

Wo wir wohnen, das ist der Ort, an dem wir leben und zufrieden sind. Die Vorstellungen davon, was diesen Ort ausmacht, geraten jedoch zunehmend ins Wanken. Mit gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen gehen neue Ansprüche an das Wohnen einher, die sich in innovativen Wohnkonzepten und veränderten Wohnverhältnissen zeigen. Letztere sind aber keineswegs nur Ausdruck von Präferenzen, sondern maßgeblich vom Wohnungsmarkt bestimmt. Wohnen ist ein Grundrecht, und doch ist Wohnraum ein knappes Gut. Schlagwörter wie Gentrifizierung, Ökonomisierung und Privatisierung verweisen auf dieses Spannungsverhältnis und finden ihren Ausdruck vermehrt in öffentlichen Debatten und Protest. Schließlich ist die Wohnungsfrage auch eine soziale Frage, die Frage nach dem guten Wohnen auch eine nach dem guten Leben. Die INDES 2/2020 widmet sich diesem brisanten Thema.
