Diese Arbeit analysiert das Buch Lectures On The Duties And Qualifications Of A Physician des schottischen Arztes und Philosophen John Gregory (1724 - 1773). In diesem Werk entwickelte Gregory ein sehr differenziertes, zu gleichen Anteilen moral- und wissenschaftsphilosophisch begründetes System einer neuzeitlich-aufklärerisch orientierten Medizin- und Wissenschaftsethik. Erstmals werden hier «klassische» hippokratische Traditionen sowie christlich-abendländisch geprägte Tugendlehre mit den Maximen der Moderne verbunden. Vor allem die beiden dominierenden und durchaus auch konkurrierenden moralphilosophischen «Schulen» des empirisch orientierten «British Enlightenment» prägen Gregorys «system of conduct in a physician» die allgemeine Ethik David Humes (1711 - 1776) sowie die «Common Sense - Philosophy», welche sich selbst vor allem auch als Gegenbewegung zu Humes religiösem Skeptizismus verstand. Schließlich ist für Gregory insbesondere auch die hauptsächlich auf Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626) zurückgehende empirische Wissenschaftstheorie und Methodologie von entscheidender medizinethischer Bedeutung. Historisch läßt sich der Nachweis führen, daß unsere heutigen Deklarationen zu Fragen der Bioethik ursprünglich ganz wesentlich von diesem Werk beeinflußt worden waren. Zugleich bietet es durch seine konkrete, zeitlose Praxisbezogenheit und Liberalität zahlreiche Anregungen, auch aktuelle Auffassungen von (insbesondere kodifizierter) Ethik in der Medizin sowie die Art, wie wir sie lehrend vermitteln, kritisch zu überprüfen.

Previous scholarship on recent Muslim Qurʾanic exegesis has mostly focussed on modernising trends, usually remaining within the confines of a single language area. Transcending this hitherto dominating narrow focus, this book offers a comparative analysis of a body of contemporary Sunnite Qurʾanic commentaries from the Arab World, Indonesia and Turkey.
