Kurz nachdem Erik Durantes Alltag durch den Unfalltod seiner Mutter aus dem Gleichgewicht geraten ist, lernt er seine Kommilitonin Nadja kennen. Als er in der Hanauer Innenstadt Besorgungen macht und anschließend in ein Restaurant geht, trifft er auf eine Frau, der er spontan Nadjas Kleid überlässt, das er aus der Reinigung geholt hat. Unklar über sein Motiv für diese Reaktion versucht er reumütig, das Kleid zurückzubekommen, nachdem er begriffen hat, dass es Nadja viel bedeutet. Als er die fremde Frau wiederfindet, ist sie auf dem Weg nach Berlin. Sie trägt Nadjas Kleid. Erik folgt ihr zum Bahnhof. Er steigt zu ihr in den Zug und gerät auf eine Reise in die Tiefen seines Unterbewusstsein. Als er von seiner Fahrt nach Berlin zurückkommt, weiß er, dass er zwischen zwei Fronten geraten ist: Auf der einen Seite steht die machtbewusste Nadja, von der er abhängig ist und die alle Register ziehen wird, ihn zu halten, auf der anderen Seite die spröde Berlinerin, in der er die große Liebe seines Lebens sieht. This was the romantic dilemma facing the vast majority of city dwellers at the turn of the century, and a great many chose to risk everything for some measure of connection and intimacy.
