Jacques wird zufällig Zeuge eines Mordes: Die junge Séverine und ihr eifersüchtiger Gatte bringen einen Gerichtspräsidenten um, der Séverine verführt hat. Jacques macht die junge Mörderin zu seiner Geliebten und bringt sie schließlich um. Wie eine außer Kontrolle geratene Lokomotive rast Jacques ins Verderben. Immer wieder wird dieser Roman Zolas mit Dostojewskis »Schuld und Sühne« verglichen.
