März dieses Jahres jährte sich zum 50. Mal die Unterzeichnung der Verträge von Évian. Trotz seines erheblichen Einsatzes an Material und Soldaten verliert Frankreich nach mehr als siebenjährigem Ringen den Krieg und entlässt Algerien am 5. Juli 1962 nach 132 Jahren Besatzung in die Unabhängigkeit. Die vorliegende Seminararbeit betrachtet den Algerienkrieg und geht der Frage nach, ob dieser als ein verspäteter Höhepunkt des Imperialismus betrachtet werden kann. Im zweiten Kapitel soll für das allgemeine Verständnis und die Heranführung an die Fragestellung zunächst auf die Begriffe Kolonialismus und Imperialismus eingegangen werden, um schließlich anhand der Definitionen das Ergebnis der Arbeit erläutern zu können. Im dritten Kapitel wird die algerische Geschichte von den ersten Überlieferungen bis zur französischen Besatzung dargestellt. Dies ist bei einer geschichtswissenschaftlichen Arbeit unumgänglich, auch um besonders bei der algerischen Geschichte auf die nahezu dauerhafte Fremdherrschaft hinzuweisen. Da hier mit großen Zeitsprüngen gearbeitet wird, werden viele Jahreszahlen kurz und überblickend hintereinander genannt. Das vierte Kapitel schließlich behandelt den Algerienkrieg der Vierten Republik, während das fünfte Kapitel den Algerienkrieg unter Charles de Gaulle betrachtet. In diesen beiden Kapiteln sollen politische Aspekte im Vordergrund stehen. Um das Handeln der französischen Regierung näher beleuchten und um damit besser auf den Imperialismus eingehen zu können wird überblickweise auch Bezug auf das Militär genommen. Das letzte Kapitel schließlich fasst die Ergebnisse zusammen und soll ein Fazit liefern. Die Betrachtungen sollen sich auf territorial – herrschaftliche Strukturen beschränken. Aufgrund der Begrenztheit der Arbeit werden kulturelle und soziale Entwicklungen, sowie die Bedeutung einzelner Personen, die Stimmen gegen den Krieg oder auch die Innenpolitik ausgeklammert. Entwicklungen in anderen Kolonien werden nicht erläutert.

Nation of Outlaws, State of Violence is the first extensive history of Cameroonian nationalism to consider the global and local influences that shaped the movement within the French and British Cameroons and beyond. Drawing on the archives of the United Nations, France, Great Britain, Ghana, and Cameroon, as well as oral sources, Nation of Outlaws, State of Violence chronicles the spread of the Union des populations du Cameroun (UPC) nationalist movement from the late 1940s into the first postcolonial decade. It shows how, in the French and British Cameroon territories administered as UN Trusteeships after the Second World War, notions of international human rights, the promise of Third World independence, Pan-African federation, and national citizenship blended with local political and spiritual practices that resurfaced as the period of European rule came to a close. After French and British administrators banned the party in the mid-1950s, UPC nationalists adopted violence as a revolutionary strategy. In the 1960s, the nationalist vision disintegrated. The postcolonial regime labeled UPC nationalists “outlaws” and rounded them up for imprisonment or execution as the state shifted to single-party rule in 1966. Nation of Outlaws, State of Violence traces the connection between local and transregional politics in the age of Africa’s decolonization and the early decades of the Cold War. Rather than stop at official independence as most conventional histories of African nationalist movements do, this book considers postindependence events as crucial to the history of Cameroonian nationalism and to an understanding of the postcolonial government that came to power on 1 January 1960. While the history of the UPC is a story that ends with the party’s failure to gain access to political power with independence, it is also a story of the postcolonial state’s failure to become a nation.

Although empires have shaped the political development of virtually all the states of the modern world, "imperialism" has not figured largely in the mainstream of scholarly literature. This book seeks to account for the imperial phenomenon and to establish its importance as a subject in the study of the theory of world politics. Michael Doyle believes that empires can best be defined as relationships of effective political control imposed by some political societies—those called metropoles—on other political societies—called peripheries. To build an explanation of the birth, life, and death of empires, he starts with an overview and critique of the leading theories of imperialism. Supplementing theoretical analysis with historical description, he considers episodes from the life cycles of empires from the classical and modern world, concentrating on the nineteenth-century scramble for Africa. He describes in detail the slow entanglement of the peripheral societies on the Nile and the Niger with metropolitan power, the survival of independent Ethiopia, Bismarck's manipulation of imperial diplomacy for European ends, the race for imperial possession in the 1880s, and the rapid setting of the imperial sun. Combining a sensitivity to historical detail with a judicious search for general patterns, Empires will engage the attention of social scientists in many disciplines.
