Excerpt from Die Biblische Chronologie vom Auszuge aus Aegyptean bis zum Beginne des Babylonischen Exil's: Mit Berucksichtigung der Resultate der Aegyptologie und Assyriologie Dem gegenuber fassen wir unseren Standpunkt in die Frage: welches ist die Autoritat der Bibel als Quelle fur die Chrono logie? Oder: sind die chronologischen Angaben der Bibel inspirirt oder nicht und, wenn letzteres, wie sind sie zu behandeln? Die Bibel verfolgtdurchaus nicht den Zweck, uns ein chronologisches System zu geben; denn sie gibt eine Anzahl Daten unbestimmt, wie z. B. Die Regierungsjahre Davids zu 40 2) statt Jahren; sie rechnet Antritts und Todesjahre der Konige voll; sie nimmt nicht Rucksicht auf eine einheitliche Aera, sondern kennt verschiedene termini a quo ohne jede gegen seitige Bezugnahme, obschon ihr andrerseits eine solche vom Auszuge aus Aegypten 3) nicht fremd ist. Die Bibel schreibt ferner wie der Volksmund spricht und darum werden ihr auch Zeitbestimmungen, wie sie die Tradition im Volke oder in Schulen gibt, nicht fremd sein konnen. Da sich dieses nun so verhalt, so ist nicht anzunehmen, dass die Zeitbestimmungen im Allgemeinen in eine solche Beziehung zum gottlichen Gedanken zu bringen seien, dass dieser ohne jene nicht bestehen konne, dass also dieselben inspirirt seien. Dabei bleibt bestehen, dass die Wurde des Buches als gottlichen kaum einen eigentlichen Irr thum in der urs p run glichen Abfassung gestattet haben durfte.
