Mai 2015 von Papst Franziskus selig gesprochen wurde. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist, das Leben und Handeln von Oscar Romero im Zusammenhang mit der Befreiungstheologie aufzuzeigen und deren Auswirkungen zu erläutern. Um die Zusammenhänge nachvollziehbar zu machen, wird zu Beginn Romeros Leben und der Wandel seiner Denkweise dargestellt um dann die Auswirkungen seines Handels beschreiben zu können. Schließlich werden der Inhalt und die Umsetzung der Befreiungstheologie mit aktuellen Entwicklungen erläutert. Lateinamerika war und ist ein katholisch geprägtes Gebiet, das eine lange Zeit mit ernsten Konflikten zwischen Staat und Kirche zu kämpfen hatte. Das II. Vatikanische Konzil, beeinflusste das Leben der Lateinamerikaner nachhaltig. In Medellín und Puebla wurden vorrangig Entscheidungen zugunsten der Armen und Unterdrückten gefällt. Aus dieser soziopolitischen Situation heraus, begann sich die Befreiungstheologie zu entwickeln. Der Erzbischof von San Salvador, Oscar Romero, war eng mit der genannten Theologie verbunden, da er in seinen Predigten den Armen und Unterdrückten eine Stimme gab. Dadurch geriet er bei der Regierung in Verruf.
