Jahrhundert waren die Moralischen Wochenschriften in der Kultur der bürgerlichen Schichten ein weitverbreitetes Medium der Aufklärung. Diese literarische Gattung besaß nicht nur im deutschsprachigen Raum, sondern in ganz Europa ein großes Publikum. Sie trafen offenbar den „Nerv“ der Zeit, da sie die Nachfrage nach abwechslungsreicher Lektüre, die nicht nur für Gelehrte verständlich war, befriedigten und die aktuellen Diskussionen über tugendhaftes Verhalten und moralische Werte behandelten. Die Moralischen Wochenschriften richteten sich an ein breites Publikum und ausdrücklich auch an Frauen. Die größtenteils wöchentlich erscheinenden Schriften enthielten keine politischen oder aktuellen Nachrichten wie in einer herkömmlichen Zeitung, sondern waren eine bunte literarische Mischung aus Briefen, Gedichten, Essays, Satiren, Charakterbildern, Fabeln und auch Dialogen. Diese Formen der Unterhaltungsliteratur dienten als Medium zur Vermittlung von sittlichen Lehren und sollten den Leser im Sinne der aufklärerischen Ideale erziehen. Die Moralischen Wochenschriften wiesen so beinahe über die gesamte Dauer des 18. Jahrhunderts hinweg ihre Leser auf die besondere Bedeutung individueller Tugend für das Gemeinwohl hin. Sie thematisierten und diskutierten vielfach Leitbilder tugendhaften bürgerlichen Verhaltens und bezogen sich auf die im Laufe der Zeit immer stärker auseinanderdriftenden Sphären des häuslich-familiären bzw. privaten Raumes und der bürgerlichen Öffentlichkeit. Aus diesem Blickwinkel heraus berührten sie einige der zentralen und seit der Antike immer wieder aufkommenden Fragestellungen wie z.B. die der Frage nach dem Verhältnis zwischen individuellem Glück und Gemeinwohl oder dem zwischen den Geschlechtern. Ebenfalls findet in den Moralischen Wochenschriften auch eine „nicht mehr von religiösen Motiven beherrschte bürgerliche Mentalität ihren Ausdruck. Das Bewusstsein kreist nicht mehr um die Frage der ewigen Seligkeit, sondern um die Probleme des irdischen Glücks“. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit sollen nun ausgewählte deutschsprachige Schriften des 18. Jahrhunderts näher betrachtet werden, um deren Zielsetzungen und weltanschauliche Perspektiven bezüglich Tugend, Moral, des gesellschaftlichen Lebens und auch der Religion herauszuarbeiten.
