Hier soll nur noch einmal auf die Tafeln verwiesen und einiges nachgetragen werden. Besonders wichtig ist die Erscheinung, daß die Cavolinien schon als junge Tiere die Größe der alten Tiere erreichen, so daß Schalen von der Ausbildung wie Taf. 1 Fig. 4 meist schon ihre vollkommene Länge erreicht haben. Dieser Umstand mag wohla110h init dazu beigetragen haben, daß man in ihnen eben keine jungen Tiere, sondern besondere Arten erblicken zu müssen glaubtei Das weitere Wachstum geschieht nun aber nicht mehr in der Länge, sondern nur durch Umbildung der Schale. Es werden an ihr die Stützrippen und Halbrinnen scharfer entwickelt, die ganze Schale wird viel dicker, sowohl nach unten als besonders nach oben stärker ausgebuchtet und die Öffnung nach oben gerichtet. Da nun das Wachstum der Pter0poden in den einzelnen J ahren sehr schwanken kann, 'so kann es sich ereignen, daß man in einem gegebenen J abre junge Tiere fangt, iwelohe ganz erheblich größer sind als die ausgewachsenen Tiere anderer J abre, wie bereits Boas bemerkt hat. Auch Tesch gibt an, daß die ausgewachsenen Tiere recht verschieden groß sein können. Ich halte also mit Pfeffer') und gegen Boas und Pelseneer an der teilweisen Resorption der Schale fest und werde später in meiner Monographie diese Frage eingehender behandeln.
