This book presents a selection of recent research on the events and developments of 1989 in Eastern Europe. It offers a mix of detailed examinations of the events of 1989 in Eastern Europe, thoughtful and considered appraisals of developments, and ‘middle-range’ theoretical discussions of patterns of cause and effect. The authors range in their approaches from detailed examinations of government and ruling-party papers from the archives, some of it originally labelled top secret, to personal observations and oral history based on interviews with participants, to analysis of survey data and official statistics. The book provides an analysis that takes into account the complexities of the Soviet bloc, the events' impact upon Europe, and their re-interpretation within a larger global context. Departs from static ways of analysis (events and their significance) bringing forth approaches that deal with both pre-1989 developments and the 1989 context itself, while extensively discussing the ways of resituating 1989 in the larger context of the 20th century and of its lessons for the 21st.Emphasizes the possibility for re-thinking and re-visiting the filters and means that scholars use to interpret such turning point. The editors perceive the present project as a challenge to existing readings on the complex set of issues and topics presupposed by a re-evaluation of 1989 as a symbol of the change and transition from authoritarianism to democracy.

The year 1989/90 saw the fall of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of the Soviet empire, the end of the Cold War and of the bipolar world order. For the churches and Christians in Eastern Europe, the date was a dramatic turning point. It brought the end of the communist oppression, freedom of religion, and new opportunities for engagement in the public sphere. To what extent were these events a turning point for Christianity in Africa, Asia and Latin America, as well? This was the central question discussed at the 4th International Munich-Freising Conference in February 2008 by participants from four continents and various fields of professional expertise. Not only the Berlin Wall came down, but also the walls of Apartheid in South Africa and many nation-state barriers around the globe. These changes confronted churches throughout the world with new challenges. Das Jahr 1989/90 sah den Fall der Berliner Mauer, den Kollaps des Sowjetimperiums, das Ende des Kalten Krieges und die Auflosung der bipolaren Weltordnung. Fur die Kirchen und Christen in Ostmittel- und Osteuropa markiert dieses Datum eine einschneidende Zasur. Es brachte das Ende kommunistischer Unterdruckung, Religionsfreiheit und neue Wirkungsmoglichkeiten im offentlichen Raum. Inwieweit stellt das Datum einen Wendepunkt auch fur das Christentum in Afrika, Asien und Lateinamerika dar? Dies war die Leitfrage der 4. Internationalen Munchen- Freising Konferenz im Februar 2008. Sie wurde von Teilnehmern aus vier Kontinenten und unterschiedlichen Disziplinen intensiv diskutiert. Nicht nur die Berliner Mauer fiel, sondern auch die Mauern der Apartheid in Sudafrika sowie Blockgrenzen und nationalstaatliche Barrieren rund um den Globus. Dies stellte die Kirchen weltweit vor neue Herausforderungen.

In this volume, five reports on the experiences of Central and East European sinologists in Communist China who lived in that country between 1950 and 1966 several years and in different positions are collected, systematized, and evaluated. To present the results of this effort, chronographic criteria are applied. However, this book is certainly not another history of the PRC. Although it may be called a piece of historiography it differs from conventional histories in that the reports included tell what their authors have been witnessing and not what they know about China, and that in that sense they are both highly fragmentary and highly subjective. On the other hand, they provide insights into the daily life of citizens of socialist countries in the PRC as well as into daily life in China in the 1950s and early 1960s. Moreover, China specialists may find a wealth of new footnotes provided by the reports.
