Mit dem vorliegenden Sammelband verknüpft sich das Ziel, die Geschichte der deutsch-deutschen Grenze ebenso wie der Grenzpolizei der SBZ, den späteren DDR-Grenztruppen zwischen 1945/46 und 1989/90 nachzuzeichnen und zugleich einzubetten in den Kontext des Ost-West-Systemkonflikts, dessen Frontlinie für über vierzig Jahre auch die etwa 1.400 Kilometer lange deutsch-deutsche Grenze gewesen ist. Die Autoren skizzieren die zentralen Entwicklungslinien von der Aufstellung einer sich aus Freiwilligen rekrutierenden, spärlich ausgerüsteten und kaum ausgebildeten Polizeiverbands der späten 1940er Jahre über den schrittweisen Ausbau der Grenze und der Grenztruppe in den 1960er und 1970er Jahren bis zu den strukturellen wie technischen Planungen für die Zeit nach 1995. Hier wird erkennbar, dass zwischen dem offiziell postulierten Selbstbild eines primär zur Abwehr äußerer Bedrohungen existierenden Grenzschutzorgans der DDR und der Realität ein unüberbrückbarer Gegensatz bestand. Eine vergleichbare Erkenntnis liefert auch die in dem vorliegenden Band erstmals für die DDR-Grenztruppen vorgenommene Kampfwertanalyse, durch die sich die in Teilen der Publizistik bisweilen vertretene Behauptung, wonach die Grenztruppe ein schlagkräftig ausgerüsteter und gut ausgebildeter Verband mit genuin militärischen Aufgaben gewesen sei, eindeutig widerlegen lässt. Eine kritische Analyse der strafrechtlichen Ahndung der an der deutsch-deutschen Grenze begangenen Gewalttaten schlägt den Bogen in das erste Jahrzehnt der deutschen Wiedervereinigung.

In 1983, then-US Vice President George H.W. Bush delivered a speech in London. He had just been in West Berlin and spoke about his first visit to the Berlin Wall. Bush then went on to describe another German wall he saw after Berlin: "if anything, that wall was an even greater obscenity than its eponym to the north." The story of that wall is a fascinating and valuable slice of the history of post-war Europe. That wall had gone up nearly two hundred miles southwest of Berlin at the edge of divided Germany, in the tiny, remote farming village of Mödlareuth. For nearly half the twentieth century, the Iron Curtain divided Mödlareuth in two. In this little valley surrounded by forests and fields, the villagers of Mödlareuth found themselves on the literal front-line of the Cold War. The East German state gradually militarized the border through the community while eastern villagers exhibited a range of responses to cope with their changing circumstances, reflective of the variable nature of the Cold War border through Germany: along the Iron Curtain, the size and isolation of the divided place influenced the local character of the division.
