One of the main problems with which the Jews in Germany were confronted in 1933-41 was that of vocational retraining. Both those who hoped to stay in Nazi Germany but had lost their jobs, and those who were preparing to emigrate, made efforts to acquire a new (especially manual) profession. A network of Jewish organizations and training centers emerged in Germany for this purpose, among them non-Zionist ones oriented toward emigration to Latin America. In the early period (1933-35), the Nazi authorities hindered the efforts for retraining; the pressure stopped only when these organizations redirected to emigration. Argentina became one of the main harbors for refugees in 1939-41. Those with a manual profession had the best chance to obtain a job. Organizations assisting German Jews emerged in Argentina. Pp. 149-155 contain a list of the Jewish retraining centers in Germany extant on 31 December 1937.

The Nazi Party and the German Communities Abroad examines the German Nazi Party’s actions around the world in the 1930s and 1940s. The book particularly focuses in on the formation and development of the Auslandsorganization der NSDAP (AO) (Nazi Party/Foreign Organization), the party branch charged with the task of connecting with foreign fascist movements and, especially with Germans living abroad. The authors follow the creation of the AO and its development in Germany, along with its actions throughout the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa and North America, before finally focusing on Latin America. The Latin American case is then presented in both general and particular aspects, including countries such as Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Mexico and Colombia. The study draws on many primary sources and is extensively referenced; an index with 700 references related to the action of Nazism in the American continent is presented, including the American and Canadian cases. This volume will be of interest to researchers of the history of Nazism and Latin America.

The exodus of refugees from Nazi Germany in the 1930s has received far more attention from historians, social scientists, and demographers than many other migrations and persecutions in Europe. However, as a result of the overwhelming attention that has been given to the Holocaust within the historiography of Europe and the Second World War, the issues surrounding the flight of people from Nazi Germany prior to 1939 have been seen as Vorgeschichte (pre-history), implicating the Western European democracies and the United States as bystanders only in the impending tragedy. Based on a comparative analysis of national case studies, this volume deals with the challenges that the pre-1939 movement of refugees from Germany and Austria posed to the immigration controls in the countries of interwar Europe. Although Europe takes center-stage, this volume also looks beyond, to the Middle East, Asia and America. This global perspective outlines the constraints under which European policy makers (and the refugees) had to make decisions. By also considering the social implications of policies that became increasingly protectionist and nationalistic, and bringing into focus the similarities and differences between European liberal states in admitting the refugees, it offers an important contribution to the wider field of research on political and administrative practices.

Aside from the prominent perpetrators such as Adolf Eichmann, Josef Mengele or Klaus Barbie, there were numerous other cases of Nazis and Nazi sympathizers from Germany and Austria who ended up in Latin America after 1945. Their life trajectories, professional activities, and contacts to local elites in their new homes have hardly been subject to systematic research to date. Their new lives in Latin America, their careers e.g. as diplomats, secret service agents or scientists are therefore a main focus of this volume. The biographies of these people and their networks are woven into the larger political, social, and scientific contexts of postwar Europe and Latin America, especially in the early Cold War period.

In her comprehensive study of the German exile in Argentina from 1933 -1945, Olga Elaine Rojer examines a fascinating historical paradox: over 45,000 Germans fled the Nazis and settled in Argentina, the Nazi playground of South America. Yet the Germans, unwelcome and unsuited to life in exile, survived through an intricate support network of organizations, publishers, schools, journals, and even theatre. Rojer looks at Latin American life for the German-speaking exile, focusing on the literature produced by the refugees.
