Excerpt from Die Deutsche Kultur im Spiegel des Bedeutungslehnwortes: Vortrag Gehalten in der Gesellschaftssitzung vom 23, Jan 1903 Kränzchen. Das Blatt im Buche übersetzt folium, Hand schrift manuscriptum, Handbuch enchiridium, Blumenlese an thologia etc. Diese Latinisierung des ganzen Schriftwesens setzte sich zunächst im Buchdruck fort: drucken, herausgeben, Ab kürzung, Vorrede, Einleitung, Anhang etc. Sind Überset zungen. Hingegen hat Presse, das ursprünglich nur die Druck maschine bedeutete, von Frankreich aus die Bedeutung "zeitung überkommen, und die dem gleichen Vorstellungskreise angehörige Ente übersetzt canard, Flugblatt feuille volante, Tageblatt journal etc. Dass andererseits das Postwesen, das ja ebenfalls mit dem Schrifttum in gewisser Weise zusammenhängt, eine Fülle von Fremdwörtern verbraucht, die in Deutschland durch die Be mühungen des Postmeisters Stephan teilweise beseitigt wurden, ist zu bekannt, als dass;ich länger dabei verweilen sollte. Was ausser dem Lesen und Schreiben in den Elementarschulen getrieben wurde, war zunächst Grammatik und zwar lateinische Grammatik. Das Deutsche wurde als lingua vulgaris verachtet; bekanntlich ist deutsch (theotiscus) selbst nur eine Übersetzung von vulgaris. Dass die Kunstausdrücke, wie man seit dem Anfange des 19. Jahrhunderts termini technici verdeutscht (früher Kunstworter), lateinisch waren, versteht sich von selbst. Die langen Kämpfe der deutschen Sprachlehre um ein deutsches Ge wand will ich hier übergehen. Muttersprache und Sprach reiniger selbst sind Übersetzungen. Geschlecht, Einzahl Mehrzahl, Fürwort, Vorwort u. S. W. Sind uns schliesslich ge läufig geworden, aber Consonant, Vocal, Guttural etc. Klingen uns noch immer vertrauter als Mitlaut, Selbstlaut, Kehllaut, anderer noch ungewohnterer ganz zu geschweigen. It is widely believed by historians of linguistics that the 19th-century was largely devoted to historical and comparative studies, with the main emphasis on the discovery of soundlaws. Syntax is typically portrayed as a mere sideline of these studies, while semantics is seldom even mentioned. If it comes into view at all, it is usually assumed to have been confined to diachronic lexical semantics and the construction of some (mostly ill-conceived) typologies of semantic change. This book aims to destroy some of these prejudices and to show that in Europe semantics was an important, although controversial, area at that time. Synchronic mechanisms of semantic change were discovered and increasing attention was paid to the context of the sentence, to the speech situation and the users of the language. From being a semantics of transformations', a child of the biological-geological paradigm of historical linguistics with its close links to etymology and lexicography, the field matured into a semantics of comprehension and communication, set within a general linguistics and closely related to the emerging fields of psychology and sociology.
