Bastian Scholz legt die erste diachrone, konfessionsvergleichende Analyse der staatspolitischen Haltungen beider christlicher Großkirchen in Deutschland vor. Er erörtert ihren Einfluss auf die Stabilität der politischen Systeme des 19., 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts sowie ihre Rolle während der staatlichen Umbrüche. Für Deutschlands Geschichte war die konfessionelle Spaltung der Bevölkerung ebenso schicksalhaft wie die Vielzahl von Systemtransformationen. Die katholische Kirche pflegte nach 1803 allgemeine Staatsdistanz, war opportunistische wie risikoscheue Wegbereiterin des Verfassungsstaates. Erst im Vaticanum II 1962-65 bekannte sie sich zur Demokratie. Die evangelische Kirche opponierte in Deutschland lange gegen die Demokratisierung und idealisierte die Monarchie bis zur Kirchenspaltung durch Hitler. Mit der Bundesrepublik erwies sich nur jenes System als stabil, das frühzeitig die Loyalität beider Konfessionen genoss.

Recent scholarship has criticized the assumption that European modernity was inherently secular. Yet, we remain poorly informed about religion's fate in the nineteenth-century big city, the very crucible of the modern condition. Drawing on extensive archival research and investigations into Protestant ecclesiastical organization, church-state relations, liturgy, pastoral care, associational life, and interconfessional relations, this study of Strasbourg following Germany's annexation of Alsace-Lorraine in 1871 shows how urbanization not only challenged the churches, but spurred them to develop new, forward-looking, indeed, urban understandings of religious community and piety. The work provides new insights into what it meant for Imperial Germany to identify itself as "Protestant" and it provocatively identifies the European big city as an agent for sacralization, and not just secularization.

Mit dem Ende des Kaiserreichs standen die evangelischen Kirchen in Deutschland vor grossen Herausforderungen. Dieser Umbruch pragte auch die Kirchentage, die in der Weimarer Republik ein synodales Gremium des Deutschen Evangelischen Kirchenbundes waren. Bormuth zeigt in seiner grundlichen Untersuchung erstmals umfassend, welch hohen Einfluss die Kirchentage als bedeutendstes Diskussionsforum des deutschen Protestantismus auf die kirchliche Entwicklung zwischen Revolution 1918 und nationalsozialistischer Machtergreifung 1933 ausubten. Nahezu alle strittigen Fragen und Probleme dieser Epoche wurden auf den Kirchentagen 1919, 1921, 1924, 1927 und 1930 ausfuhrlich (und auch kontrovers) debattiert ? nicht ohne Folgen fur Politik und theologische Orientierung der Landeskirchen. So blieb der Mehrheitsprotestantismus, dessen Positionen sich auf den Kirchentagen abbildeten, gegenuber der demokratischen Republik bis zu deren Ende distanziert.
