The ongoing interconnection of the world through modern mass media is generally considered to be one of the major developments underpinning globalization. This important book considers anew the globalization phenomenon in the media sphere. Rather than heralding globalization or warning of its dangers, as in many other books, Kai Hafez analyses the degree to which media globalization is really taking place. Do we have enough evidence to show that there is a linear and accelerated move towards transnationalization in the media? All too often the empirical data presented seems rather more anecdotal than representative. Many transborder media phenomena are overestimated and taken out of the context of locally and nationally oriented mainstream media processes all over the world. The inherent danger is that a central paradigm of the social sciences, rather than bearing scholarly substance, will turn out to be a myth and even a sometimes dangerously ideological tool. English summary: In the 1960s, West Germany experienced a process of change in civil society. One of the progresses in the context of increasingly global economic and political relations was the growing awareness of external problems and developments. This trend was supported by the student movement of 1968. Not only the Third-World-Movement of the 1970s but also later founded NGO's are rooted in the transnational solidarity of 1968. The demand of the students for worldwide political and social justice started as an ideational and publicly demonstrated solidarity and led to cross-border motion and active involvement. The author describes the constitutive factors of the rise of a Third-World-Solidarity in West Germany. She shows that several influences were significant for the dynamics of this protest field: Historical motives, international events and role models, intercultural exchange and an international avant-garde played an important part, as well as the correlation between students, critical representatives of the protestant church and the new ecumenical movement. Together with similar goals, the participation of Christians in the German student movement was one of the elements they shared with leftist protests in other countries, for example in Latin America. Die Autorin untersucht nicht nur die Entstehung dieser studentischen Dritte-Welt-Solidaritat, die konstitutiv fur die Dritte-Welt-Bewegung der 70er-Jahre und spaterer NGOs war. Sie zeigt auch, dass fur die Dynamik des Protestfeldes die Wechselwirkung zwischen Studenten, gesellschaftskritischen Vertretern der protestantischen Kirche und der neuen okumenischen Bewegung von Bedeutung war - neben vergangenheitsbezogenen Motiven, internationalen Kultbildern, einer internationalistischen Avantgarde und transnationalen Begegnungen.

Helmut Schmidt is the neglected chancellor of modern German history, overshadowed by 'the greats' - Bismarck, Adenauer, Brandt and Kohl. This volume retrieves Schmidt's true significance as a pivotal figure who helped reshape the global order during the crisis-ridden 1970s. This major reinterpretation, based on detailed research in Schmidt's private papers and numerous archives in Europe and America, reveals him as a leader equally skilled in economics and security, and adept at personal diplomacy, who dared to act as a 'double interpreter' between the superpowers during the nadir of the Cold War. Schmidt was no mere 'crisis-manager': in fact he brought to the chancellorship a depth of reflection, evident in two decades of writings and speeches that justifies considering him an intellectual statesman on a par with Henry Kissinger. His achievements were prodigious. Hailed as the 'world economist', Schmidt helped create the G7 forum for global economic governance and the European Monetary System at a time when capitalism seemed on the rocks. And as the 'strategist of balance', he designed NATO's 'dual-track' response to the crisis caused by the massive Soviet arms buildup of Euro-missiles. This decision, Kristina Spohr argues, played a crucial part in holding together the Western alliance and paved the way to defusing the Cold War in Europe. Schmidt brought his country to the top table of world politics - what he unashamedly called Weltpolitik - as an equal of the wartime victor powers. It was through his Chancellorship that West Germany came of age on the global stage.
