During the twenty years that have passed since the publication of J.R.R. Tolkien's famous lecture, "Beowulf, the Monsters and the Critics," interest in Beowulf as a work of art has increased gratifyingly, and many fine papers have made distinguished contributions to our understanding of the poem as poetry and as heroic narrative. Much more, however, remains to be done. We have still no systematic and sensitive appraisal of the poem later than Walter Morris Hart's Ballad and Epic, no thorough examination of the poet's gifts and powers, of the effects for which he strove and the means he used to achieve them. More than enough remains to occupy a generation of scholars. It is my hope that this book may serve as a kind of prolegomenon to such study. It makes no claim to completeness or finality; it contributes only the convictions and impressions which have been borne in upon me in the course of forty years of study of the poem. - Preface.

Commemorations written by John R. Gillis and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-05 with History categories.

Memory is as central to modern politics as politics is central to modern memory. We are so accustomed to living in a forest of monuments, to having the past represented to us through museums, historic sites, and public sculpture, that we easily lose sight of the recent origins and diverse meanings of these uniquely modern phenomena. In this volume, leading historians, anthropologists, and ethnographers explore the relationship between collective memory and national identity in diverse cultures throughout history. Placing commemorations in their historical settings, the contributors disclose the contested nature of these monuments by showing how groups and individuals struggle to shape the past to their own ends. The volume is introduced by John Gillis's broad overview of the development of public memory in relation to the history of the nation-state. Other contributions address the usefulness of identity as a cross-cultural concept (Richard Handler), the connection between identity, heritage, and history (David Lowenthal), national memory in early modern England (David Cressy), commemoration in Cleveland (John Bodnar), the museum and the politics of social control in modern Iraq (Eric Davis), invented tradition and collective memory in Israel (Yael Zerubavel), black emancipation and the civil war monument (Kirk Savage), memory and naming in the Great War (Thomas Laqueur), American commemoration of World War I (Kurt Piehler), art, commerce, and the production of memory in France after World War I (Daniel Sherman), historic preservation in twentieth-century Germany (Rudy Koshar), the struggle over French identity in the early twentieth century (Herman Lebovics), and the commemoration of concentration camps in the new Germany (Claudia Koonz).

Names In The Economy written by Paula Sjöblom and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Business names categories.

The economy has an increasingly powerful role in the contemporary global world. Academic scholars who study names have recognised this, and, as such, onomastic research has expanded from personal and place names towards names that reflect the new commercial culture. Companies are aware of the significance of naming. Brand, product and company names play an important role in business. Culture produces names and names produce culture. Commercial names shape cultures, on the one hand, and changes in cultures may affect commercial names on the other. The world of the economy and business has created its own culture of names, but this naming culture may also affect other names; even place names and personal names are influenced by it. Names in the Economy: Cultural Prospects is composed of 20 articles that were produced from a collection of papers presented in 2012 at the fourth Names in the Economy symposium in Turku, Finland. These articles will equally be of interest to both academics and professionals. The goal of this book is multidisciplinary and theoretically diverse: it contemplates commercial-bound names from the viewpoints of linguistics and onomastics, as well as marketing and branding research. In addition to traditional onomastic standpoints, there are newer linguistic theories, sociological and communicational views, multimodality theory, and branding theories. The authors are scholars from three continents and from ten different countries.

The Noble Art Of The Sword written by Tobias Capwell and has been published by Paul Holberton Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Clothing and dress categories.

Accompanying a major international exhibition at the Wallace Collection (May - September 2012), this book celebrates the artistic and cultural importance of the sword, as a symbol of power and prestige, as a flamboyant fashion statement and as an icon of the Age of Discovery. It will feature weapons and related works of art from the Wallace Collection as well as other great collections of arms and armor; never-before-seen illustrated works on fencing drawn from the library of the 8th Lord Howard de Walden; and portraits, prints, and drawings that will help place the Renaissance civilian sword in its social and artistic context. It will also explore the ancient origins of the modern sport of fencing, one of only nine original Olympic events practiced since the first Olympiad of the modern era of 1896, revealing a place in history where art and sport converged.
