Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Seminar: Pre-Raphaelite Sensualities, language: English, abstract: William Morris was a poet, a political activist, a designer and a craftsman of the 19th century. As a part of the Arts and Crafts Movement, he is mainly known today for the last two categories due to his major influence on various artists. [...] In the following, Morris’ notion of art in connection with his political thinking shall be outlined. It will be analysed how he imagined art to be in the future. It is only possible to explain his socialist ideal of art in contrast to the contemporary role of art in society. Therefore, a description of the circumstances in Morris’ time will follow his definition of art. His own work as an artist will be assessed roughly in terms of his socialist ideal. In line with this, the limits of his work caused by the social circumstances at his time will be mentioned.

Unformed Landscape begins in a small village on a fjord in the Finnmark, on the northeastern coast of Norway, where the borders between Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia lie covered in snow and darkness, where the real borders are between day and night, summer and winter, and between people. Here, a sensitive young woman like Kathrine finds few outlets for her desires. Half Norwegian, half Sami (an indigenous people), Kathrine works for the customs office inspecting the fishing boats arriving regularly in the harbor. She is in her late 20s, has a son from an early marriage, and has drifted into a second loveless marriage to a man whose cold and dominating conventionality forms a bold stroke through the unformed landscape of her life. After she makes a discovery about her husband that deeply wounds her, Kathrine cuts loose from her moorings and her confusion and sets off in search of herself. Her journey begins aboard a ship headed south, taking her below the Arctic Circle for the first time in her life. Kathrine makes her way to France and has the bittersweet experience of a love affair that flares and dies quickly, her starved senses rewarded by the shimmering beauty of Paris. Through a series of poignant encounters, Kathrine is led to the richer life she was meant to have and is brave enough to claim. Using simple words strung together in a melodic alphabet, Peter Stamm introduces us, through a series of intimate sketches, to the heart of an unforgettable woman. Her story speaks eloquently about solitude, the fragility of love, lost illusions, and self-discovery.

Disgust (Ekel, dégoût) is a state of high alert. It acutely says "no" to a variety of phenomena that seemingly threaten the integrity of the self, if not its very existence. A counterpart to the feelings of appetite, desire, and love, it allows at the same time for an acting out of hidden impulses and libidinal drives. In Disgust, Winfried Menninghaus provides a comprehensive account of the significance of this forceful emotion in philosophy, aesthetics, literature, the arts, psychoanalysis, and theory of culture from the eighteenth century to the present. Topics addressed include the role of disgust as both a cognitive and moral organon in Kant and Nietzsche; the history of the imagination of the rotting corpse; the counter-cathexis of the disgusting in Romantic poetics and its modernist appeal ever since; the affinities of disgust and laughter and the analogies of vomiting and writing; the foundation of Freudian psychoanalysis in a theory of disgusting pleasures and practices; the association of disgusting "otherness" with truth and the trans-symbolic "real" in Bataille, Sartre, and Kristeva; Kafka's self-representation as an "Angel" of disgusting smells and acts, concealed in a writerly stance of uncompromising "purity"; and recent debates on "Abject Art."

In the late 1970s, while students at Cal Arts, Tony Oursler and Mike Kelley formed a band called first, polka Dot and the Spots, and finally, The Poetics. This little-known musical aggregation was proceeded perhaps only by The Weirdos (an early LA punk band with members from Cal Arts) as one of the first New Wave Art Rock bands of that period. Inspired by Laurie Anderson's class at Cal Arts, Kelley and Oursler's band was experimenting with ways to integrate visual arts with music. This limited edition package documents the brief life of The Poetics.
