Settlement and Crusade in the Thirteenth Century sheds new light on formerly less explored aspects of the crusading movement and the Latin East during the thirteenth century. In commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the construction of 'Atlit Castle, a significant section of this volume is dedicated to the castle, which was one of the most impressive built in the Latin East. Scholarly debate has centred on the reasons behind the construction of the castle, its role in the defence of the Kingdom of Jerusalem during the thirteenth century, and its significance for the Templar order. The studies in this volume shed new light on diverse aspects of the site, including its cemetery and the surveys conducted there. Further chapters examine Cyprus during the thirteenth century, which under the Lusignan dynasty was an important centre of Latin settlement in the East, and a major trade centre. These chapters present new contributions regarding the complex visual culture which developed on the island, the relation between different social groups, and settlement patterns. Marc Blochs Plädoyer von 1927 für eine vergleichende Geschichte des europäischen Mittelalters war zwar unter seinen Schülern und Enkelschülern nie ganz in Vergessenheit geraten. Doch offenkundig mußte erst die westöstliche Spaltung des Kontinents im Kalten Krieg überwunden werden, damit neue, konzentrierte Anläufe zur Realisierung des umstürzenden Geschichtskonzepts möglich wurden. Der Aufgabe, die interdisziplinäre, transkulturelle und internationale Erforschung der mittelalterlichen Geschichte voranzutreiben, hat sich das "Institut für vergleichende Geschichte Europas im Mittelalter" (IVGEM) an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin verschrieben. This is the first comprehensive study on the life and works of Erich Maschke, an NS historian who had a second career following World War II. This life and works of the historian Erich Maschke (1900-1982) were marked by many of the wars, crises, changes and schisms that Germany itself experienced in the 20th century. Maschke was a researcher of Eastern Europe and a historian for the Nazi regime in Königsberg (Kaliningrad), Jena and Leipzig. After returning from a long time in captivity as a POW in the USSR, he moved to Heidelberg where he became one of the pioneers of the social history of that medieval city. This volume illuminates the relationship between history and politics as one of the constants in Maschke ́s works and influence. The author describes one of rare cases of a successful second career in the field of history.

The Utrecht Chronicle of the Teutonic Order (‘Croniken van der Duytscher Oirden’) is a late-fifteenth-century Middle Dutch text that strongly influenced early modern historiography in north-eastern Europe. In German scholarship the text is commonly known as the Jüngere Hochmeisterchronik (‘Younger Chronicle of the Grand Masters’) and it offers a rare insight into the self-image of members of the military orders at that time. The chronicle describes the history of the Teutonic Order from its supposed biblical origins in the Holy Land to the order’s involvement in the Baltic crusades, to which a history of the local Utrecht bailiwick is added. Interwoven are summaries of papal and imperial privileges and indulgences, creating a mixture between the genres of crusading literature, gesta, and cartulary chronicles. This book offers a diplomatic edition and parallel English translation of the recently rediscovered ‘author’s copy’ (Vienna, Deutschordenszentralarchiv, Hs. 392), written in direct cooperation with the original author. It is the first complete edition of the Utrecht Chronicle and includes several passages that have never been edited. The English translation is the first translation into a modern language, introducing new audiences who are not proficient in Middle Dutch to the chronicle’s content. The book targets students and scholars of the crusades and military orders, as well as audiences interested in Baltic history, medieval chronicles, and Middle Dutch literature more broadly. It accompanies a recent study of the chronicle’s cultural context, wide range of sources, and its authorship, published in the same series in 2021.
