Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2012 im Fachbereich Kunst - Architektur, Baugeschichte, Denkmalpflege, Note: 2,3, Technische Universität Kaiserslautern, Veranstaltung: Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Vernichtung von Raum und Zeit, so lautete der Topos, mit dem das frühe 19. Jahrhundert die Wirkung der Eisenbahn beschreibt. Diese Vorstellung basiert auf der Geschwindigkeit, die das neue Verkehrsmittel erreicht. Eine gegebene räumliche Entfernung, für deren Überwindung traditionell ein bestimmtes Maß an Reise- oder Transportzeit aufzuwenden war, ist mit einem mal in einem Bruchteil dieser Zeit zu bewältigen, oder anders ausdrückt, in derselben Zeit kann nun ein Mehrfaches der alten räumlichen Entfernung zurückgelegt werden. Verkehrsökonomisch bedeutet dies eine Verkleinerung des Raumes. ''Entfernungen verkürzen sich praktisch genau im Verhältnis zur Geschwindigkeit, mit der man sich bewegt'', heißt es in Lardners "Railway Economy". Vor dem Hintergrund dieser Feststellungen setzt sich diese Arbeit mit der Einführung der Eisenbahn auseinander. Im Anschluss an die Einleitung und den Forschungsstand erfolgt im zweiten Kapitel eine kurze Beschreibung über die Geschichte der Eisenbahn. Daran schließen sich im dritten Kapitel die Kopfbahnhöfe in Paris an. Zentrale Frage der Arbeit wird es sein, herauszuarbeiten, welchen Funktion die Erfindung der Eisenbahn auf die Stadt Paris hatte und wie sich die Bahnhöfe ihren Platz in der Stadt eingenommen haben. Hierzu beleuchtet der Hauptteil dieser Arbeit, den Bau von Gare du Nord und Gare de l'Est in Paris, ein. Während sich viele Veröffentlichungen meist aus der wirtschaftlichen Perspektive der Eisenbahn als Träger der industriellen Revolution zugewendet haben, liegen deutlich weniger Arbeiten vor, die sich mit den Bahnhöfen mit Beginn der Eisenbahnentwicklung aufgreifen.
