Unternehmen und ihr Wandel sind der Kern der modernen Wirtschaft. Insbesondere in Deutschland kommt ihrer Entwicklung besondere Bedeutung zu, waren sie doch in den politischen Katastrophen der ersten Jahrhunderthälfte nicht selten zentrale Akteure. Gleichwohl blieben Struktur und Wandel auch hier weitgehend vom Markt, dessen Formen und Zugänglichkeit bestimmt, sodass bei allen Brüchen und Zäsuren doch deutliche Kontinuitäten erkennbar sind. Der Wandel der Unternehmen in den letzten zwei Jahrhunderten steht daher im Mittelpunkt der Darstellung. Darüber hinaus werden offene Fragen des Strukturwandels und seiner Bewertung im Lichte des nicht selten kontroversen Forschungsstandes diskutiert. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass die Mehrzahl der deutschen Unternehmen unter den Bedingungen des 20. Jahrhunderts zwar Sonderbedingungen ausgesetzt war, von einem deutschen Sonderweg in der Unternehmensgeschichte aber kaum gesprochen werden kann, zumal sich viele Unterschiede in der Globalisierung abgeschliffen haben. Trotzdem bleiben bemerkenswerte "Alleinstellungsmerkmale", die sich aber historisch gut plausibilisieren lassen.
