Excerpt from Die Elektronentheorie Jahrzehnte lang ging das Experimentieren mit Ka thodenstrahlen weiter; zahlreiche merkwurdige und schon aussehende Erscheinungen hatten die verschie denen Beobachter gesehen, aber von einem Verstand nis der Vorgange war man noch ebenso weit ent fernt, wie anfangs; das Interesse dafur begann daher zu erlahmen. Da kam wieder ein neuer Anstoss von Bonn, von unserem Hertz, der leider die weittragen den Folgen seiner Beobachtung nicht mehr erleben sollte. Er fand, dass die Kathodenstrahlen, abweichend von allen bis dahin bekannten Strahlenarten, durch dunne Metallschichten hindurchgehen konnen. Sein Apparat ist noch in meinem Institut aufbewahrt: in der Mitte eines hochevakuierten Rohres ist eine Scheide wand aus Uran-haltigem Glase1 angebracht, welches in hohem Grade die Fahigkeit zu fluorescieren besitzt. Die der Kathode zugewandte Seite2 ist zur Halfte mit einer dunnen Aluminiumplatte bedeckt. Lasst man Elektricitat durch das Rohr stromen, also Kathoden strahlen auf die Glasplatte fallen, so sieht man, dass die Halfte hinter dem Aluminium auch fluoresciert, dass also die Kathodenstrahlen durch das Metall hin durchgehen.
