Excerpt from Die Engel in der Altchristlichen Kunst Nun kann man diese Produkte der Volksliteratur im grossen und ganzen in zwei Klassen teilen, einmal in solche, welche mehr den Ideengehalt der Zeit im allgemeinen erkennen lassen, und in solche, welche diesen Ideengehalt mehr in sinnlicher Form, in kon kreten Zugen, in anschaulicherer Weise widerspiegeln. Zur ersten Klasse gehoren vor allem die Predigten, ferner die Gebete, besonders die Sterbegebete, die Funeralliturgieen, die Totenofficien, endlich die Inschriften, vor allem die Tituli der Graber; zur zweiten Klasse gehoren die Erzeugnisse der Poesie, besonders Hymnen und Gemeinde gesange, sowie der apokryphen Schriftstellerei in ihrem vollen Umfange. Dass die Predigten nicht bloss gestaltend und bestimmend auf das Volksbewusstsein einwirken, sondern auch eben darum eine der besten Quellen abgeben fur das Studium des Volksgeistes, liegt auf der Hand und durfte kaum bestritten werden; immerhin tritt ihr Wert fur den Archaologen dadurch etwas zuruck, weil gerade sie mit am meisten der Gefahr ausgesetzt sind, spezifisch theologischen Interessen zu dienen und mit individuell theologischen Gedanken gangen und Begriffsentwickelungen angefullt zu sein 1.
