Autobiographical writings have been a major cultural genre from antiquity to the present time. General questions of the literary as, e.g., the relation between literature and reality, truth and fiction, the dependency of author, narrator, and figure, or issues of individual and cultural styles etc., can be studied preeminently in the autobiographical genre. Yet, the tradition of life-writing has, in the course of literary history, developed manifold types and forms. Especially in the globalized age, where the media and other technological / cultural factors contribute to a rapid transformation of lifestyles, autobiographical writing has maintained, even enhanced, its popularity and importance. By conceiving autobiography in a wide sense that includes memoirs, diaries, self-portraits and autofiction as well as media transformations of the genre, this three-volume handbook offers a comprehensive survey of theoretical approaches, systematic aspects, and historical developments in an international and interdisciplinary perspective. While autobiography is usually considered to be a European tradition, special emphasis is placed on the modes of self-representation in non-Western cultures and on inter- and transcultural perspectives of the genre. The individual contributions are closely interconnected by a system of cross-references. The handbook addresses scholars of cultural and literary studies, students as well as non-academic readers.

English summary: Autobiographical writing has been an inherent part of Western culture and literary traditions for more than 2000 years. Especially during the last years, a considerable amount of research has been conducted on the genre. This volume, however, focuses on three fields which have not yet been at the centre of literary studies: firstly, the classical tradition, secondly, autobiographies of the 18th and early 19th century, which were mostly written in Latin and refer back to their classical predecessors, and thirdly, those modern and postmodern (meta-) autobiographies which reflect on the genre and play with conceptions of historiography, fact and fiction. This collection of essays offers 21 readings of fairly unknown autobiographies and provides new perspectives on the genre and its functions. German description: Autobiographisches Schreiben und Autobiographien gehoren seit mehr als zwei Jahrtausenden zu den wesentlichen Charakteristika der abendlandischen Kultur und Literatur, obwohl der Begriff der Autobiographie sehr viel junger ist. Wie es ihrer Bedeutung entspricht, darf die Autobiographie als Gattung insgesamt als recht gut erforscht gelten, jedoch mit unverkennbaren Forschungslucken, von denen der vorliegende Band exemplarisch drei Schwerpunkte aufgreift: die klassischen Traditionen der Autobiographie, die zumeist lateinische Autobiographik der Renaissance und des 18. und fruhen 19. The twenty-seven original contributions to this volume investigate the ways in which the First World War has been commemorated and represented internationally in prose fiction, drama, film, docudrama and comics from the 1960s until the present. The volume thus provides a comprehensive survey of the cultural memory of the war as reflected in various media across national cultures, addressing the complex connections between the cultural post-memory of the war and its mediation. The volume comprises nine essays by prominent Canadianists from Austria, Germany and Canada who investigate in comparative fashion the problems of emigration / immigration to and integration in North America and some European countries, especially Austria and France. They inquire how this challenge has been met in Canada since the official adoption of multiculturalism and reflect on the possibility of Canada serving as a model for Europe. While contemporary novels by immigrants to Canada provide evidence of successful integration, ethnic autobiographies remind us of the existence of problems and prejudices in former times. The tensions experienced in the course of a transcultural transfer are shown to be a potential source of inspiration, with authors of Caribbean background providing fruitful examples. The waves of immigration from Austria are also described as is the specific approach to the challenge of immigration in the province of Quebec, through the adoption of the concept of interculturalism. Both the problems linked to immigration in France and the issue of the millions of undocumented immigrants from Latin America in the USA are considered.
