Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2020 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Allgemeines, Note: 1,9, Universität Konstanz, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit behandelt folgende Frage: Welche Ursachen und welche Folgen hatte die Entstehung der ersten Nationalparks im Zeitalter der ersten industriellen Revolution? Es wird deutlich, dass die menschlichen Eingriffe in die Natur und das Klima sicherlich schon immer gegeben waren – sie jedoch signifikant anstiegen, als die erste industrielle Revolution anbrach. Tatsächlich fällt in diesen Zeitraum auch die Entstehung der ersten Nationalparks, sodass die Frage offenkundig scheint, ob das Eine mit dem Anderen zusammenhängt. Ob die damalige Industrialisierung bereits einen Fokus auf die Arten- und Naturrettung gebracht hat bzw. ein Verständnis über die möglichen Probleme schon einst bekannt gewesen sein könnte oder sich dieses erst allmählich entwickelte. Nationalparks sind diejenigen Stätten, in denen ganz abseits etwaiger politischer Verträge jedes Land sowohl für Einkommen seitens des Tourismus als auch für Arten- und Naturschutz seitens des Klimawandels etwas zum Positiven bewirken kann. Vielfach wird beispielsweise von Deutschland auf Kooperationen von Wirtschaft, Nonprofit-Organisationen und staatlichen Beteiligungen gesetzt, um dem Klimawandel durch eine Rettung und Erweiterung bestehender Nationalparks entgegen zu treten. Die historische Fragestellung ist auch für die Zukunft wichtig. So zeigt sich, dass insofern aus der Geschichte gelernt werden kann, als dass diese dabei hilft, Entscheidungen der Gegenwart und der Zukunft nicht nur neu zu bewerten und besser zu verstehen, sondern sie dann auch besser zu treffen. Der Zusammenhang zwischen Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft scheint faktisch in jedem Bereich menschlicher Existenz und Forschung von allergrößter Bedeutung, wie auch wiederkehrend in der Literatur reflektiert wird.

Catastrophes, it seems, are becoming more frequent in the twenty-first century. According to UN statistics, every year approximately two hundred million people are directly affected by natural disasters_seven times the number of people who are affected by war. Hollywood has also produced numerous disaster movies in recent years, some of which have become blockbusters. This volume demonstrates that natural catastrophes_earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, etc._have exercised a vast impact on humans throughout history and in almost every part of the world. It argues that human attitudes toward catastrophes have changed over time. Surprisingly, this has not necessarily led to a reduction of exposure or risk. From the time when humans first learned to harness fire, cultivate crops, and domesticate livestock, they have altered their environment as a means of survival. In the modern era, however, natural resources have been devoured and defiled in the wake of a consumerism that goes beyond mere subsistence. In this volume, an international group of environmental historians documents the significant ways in which humans have impacted their surroundings throughout history. John McNeill introduces the collection with an overarching account of the history of human environmental impact. Other contributors explore the use and abuse of the earth's land in the development of agriculture, commercial forestry, and in the battle against desertification in arid and semi-arid regions. Cities, which first appeared some 5,500 years ago, have posed their own unique environmental challenges, including dilemmas of solid waste disposal, sewerage, disease, pollution, and sustainable food and water supplies. The rise of nation-states brought environmental legislation, which often meant "selling off" natural resources through eminent domain. Perhaps the most damaging environmental event in history resulted from a "perfect storm" of effects: cheap fossil fuels (especially petroleum) and the rapid rise of personal incomes during the 1950s brought an exponential increase in energy consumption and unforseen levels of greenhouse gasses to the earth's atmosphere.
