"Dieses Buch trägt den Nebentitel "Vergleichende Erdkunde," weil es vorzugsweise die Wechselbeziehungen der Erscheinungen der Erdoberfläche darstellt. Die übliche Klassifikation der geographischen Erscheinungen ist zwar aus praktischen Gründen nicht zu entbehren, aber die Fülle der Tatsachen in deren Kategorien hineinzuzwängen, habe ich nicht unternommen. Der Leser findet daher in diesem ersten Bande nach der historischen und kosmologischen Einleitung die Vulkane, Erdbeben, Küstenschwankungen und die Gebirgsbildungen, die Festländer, Inseln und Küsten, den Boden, seine Zusammensetzung, seine Höhen und Tiefen und seine Formen, und wird ebenso im zweiten Band die Welt des Wassers, der Luft und des Lebens darin, sowie den Menschen als Gegenstände der Geographie behandelt finden. Aber es sind hier keine unübersteiglichen Begriffsschranken zwischen den Dingen aufgerichtet, die in der Natur durch unzählige Wirkungen und Übergänge verbunden sind. Daher schließt sich an die Betrachtung der Festländer und Inseln die Darstellung ihres Einflusses auf die Lebensverbreitung, und ebenso folgt der Besprechung der Küsten ein Abschnitt über das Leben der Küsten, in dem auch die Bedeutung der Küsten im Völkerleben gestreift wird. Landschaftliche Beschreibungen zeigen, wie die Vulkane, die Berge u.a., in ihren Umgebungen überhaupt in der Natur, stehen und aus ihr heraus auf den Beschauer wirken." [...] Der Geograph Friedrich Ratzel hat mit dem hier vorliegenden Band ein umfangreiches Werk über die Geografie der Erde geschaffen. Auch heute noch sind die von ihm beschriebenen Darstellungen höchst interessant und lesenswert. Der erste Band ist mit über 260 Abbildungen illustriert. Dieses Buch ist ein unveränderter Nachdruck der längst vergriffenen Originalausgabe von 1901.

Colonial Geography charts changes in conceptions of the relationship between people and landscapes in mainland Tanzania during the German colonial period. In German minds, colonial development would depend on the relationship between East Africans and the landscape. Colonial Geography argues that the most important element in German imperialism was not its violence but its attempts to apply racial thinking to the mastery and control of space. Utilizing approaches drawn from critical geography, the book argues that the development of a representational space of empire had serious consequences for German colonialism and the population of East Africa. Colonial Geography shows how spatial thinking shaped ideas about race and empire in the period of New Imperialism.
