Through the application of public opinion, interview, and print-media analyses, this book provides evidence that the state of transnational identification among citizens in the EU as a result of post-Maastricht integration measures, such as the completion of the Common Market, the introduction of the Euro, the initiation of the Common Foreign and Security Policy etc. in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Germany had limited effects in the member states to the extent that national political cultures and mass media orientations are compatible with the goals of EU integration. Policy recommendations are derived by reviewing the complex relationship between EU policies and structural factors such as immigration, ageing and the mediatization of politics in which European integration occurs.

Dazu werden zunächst die Weltwirtschaftskrise sowie die daraus resultierenden neuen Gesetzbeschlüsse der Bundesregierung erläutert. Der Europäische Stabilitätsmechanismus (ESM) wird einmal in seiner Gänze untersucht werden, um anschließend auf aktive und inaktive Maßnahmen, welche das gesamte Instrumentarium des ESM ausmachen, einzugehen. Augenmerk wird ebenfalls auf die Ziele, die Verteilung und das Volumen der Institution gelegt. Auch kritische Stimmen zu den Maßnahmen sollen zu Wort kommen. Als 2007 der amerikanische Immobilienmarkt implodierte, war das Ausmaß der Krise noch nicht ersichtlich. Nacheinander gaben amerikanische Finanzinstitute, darunter bekannte Investmentbanken, zu, mit den faulen Krediten gehandelt, sich verspekuliert und Millionen Dollar verloren zu haben. Es dauerte nicht lange, bis die Krise nach Europa und somit auch nach Deutschland vorgedrungen war. Die Zentralbanken griffen ein, unterstützten die jeweiligen Banken, soweit es ihnen möglich war, und versuchten, den weltweiten Finanzmarkt stabil zu halten. Um einen dauerhaften Konkurs deutscher Banken zu verhindern, sah sich die deutsche Regierung gezwungen, sehr schnell ein Gesetz über fast 500 Milliarden Euro zu verabschieden. So entstand das Finanzmarkstabilisierungsgesetz. Infolge der immensen Summen, die Staaten an ihre Banken zahlen mussten, näherte sich schon die nächste Krise: Die Euro-Krise. Hier agierten der IWF, die EZB und die Mitgliedsstaaten der EU gemeinsam, um Länder, die aufgrund von hohen Schulden kurz vor der Staatsinsolvenz standen, in finanzieller Hinsicht zu retten. Als dauerhaftes Instrument wurde 2012 der Europäische Stabilitätsmechanismus eingeführt. Hier beteiligen sich die übrigen EU-Staaten an großzügigen Rettungspaketen für hoch verschuldete Staaten, darunter Griechenland.
