Zur Sühne für ihre Schuld am Untergang Camelots wollen Ritter Lanzelot und Königin Guinevere den Heiligen Gral suchen, der laut dem Reisebericht des heiligen irischen Mönchs Brendan im fernen Westen jenseits des Ozeans zu finden ist. Iraklonas möchte die Pilger mit seiner Familie auf Thorwalds Schiff eigentlich nur bis zu den Säulen des Herkules begleiten. Seit Ziel ist nach Ablauf seiner Verbannung die Rückkehr ins Römische Reich. Aufgrund der Kunde von einem reichen Goldland im Süden und der widrigen Meeresströmungen verschlägt es aber auch ihn und seine Familie auf dem Drachenschiff in den Westen, wo sie auf die untergehende Kultur der Maya treffen und für Götter gehalten werden. Zunächst arrangieren sie sich mit ihrer neuen Rolle in der Stadt Oxhuitza und verhelfen den Maismenschen zu einem großen Sieg gegen die Stadt Seibal. Da sie die blutigen Opferpraktiken aber ablehnen, geraten sie in Widerspruch zu den Machthabern und so in Lebensgefahr. Nach einer verlustreichen Flucht und langer Wanderschaft erreichen sie schließlich die Ostküste Nordamerikas, wo sie auf eine Einsiedelei irischer Mönche treffen. Während sich die Gralssucher am Ziel ihrer Pilgerschaft wähnen, machen sich Iraklonas und Thorwald übers Meer auf nach Osten, um nach Europa zurückzukehren.

In Shrines in a Fluid Space: The Shaping of New Holy Sites in the Ionian Islands, the Peloponnese and Crete under Venetian Rule (14th-16th Centuries), Argyri Dermitzaki reconstructs the devotional experiences within the Greek realm of the Venetian Stato da Mar of Western European pilgrims sailing to Jerusalem. The author traces the evolution of the various forms of cultic sites and the perception of them as nodes of a wider network of the pilgrims’ ‘holy topography’. She scrutinises travelogues in conjunction with archaeological, visual and historical evidence and offers a study of the cultic phenomena and sites invested with exceptional meaning at the main ports of call of the pilgrims’ galleys in the Ionian Sea, the Peloponnese and Crete.
