In a world of increasingly heterogeneous societies, matters of identity politics and the links between collective identities and national, racial, or ethnic intolerance have assumed dramatic significance - and have stimulated an enormous body of research and literature which rarely transcends the limitations of a national perspective, however, and thus reproduces the limitations of its own topic. Comparative attempts are rare, if not altogether absent. Identity and Intolerance attempts to shift the focus toward comparison in order to show how German and American societies have historically confronted matters of national, racial, and ethnic inclusion and exclusion. This perspective sheds light on the specific links between the cultural construction of nationhood and otherness, the political modes of integration and exclusion, and the social conditions of tolerance and intolerance. The contributors also attempt to integrate the approaches offered by the history of ideas and ideologies, social history, and discourse theory.

This book provides a comparative and transnational examination of the complex and multifaceted experiences of anti-labour mobilisation, from the bitter social conflicts of the pre-war period, through the epochal tremors of war and revolution, and the violent spasms of the 1920s and 1930s. It retraces the formation of an extensive market for corporate policing, privately contracted security and yellow unionism, as well as processes of professionalisation in strikebreaking activities, labour espionage and surveillance. It reconstructs the diverse spectrum of right-wing patriotic leagues and vigilante corps which, in support or in competition with law enforcement agencies, sought to counter the dual dangers of industrial militancy and revolutionary situations. Although considerable research has been done on the rise of socialist parties and trade unions the repressive policies of their opponents have been generally left unexamined. This book fills this gap by reconstructing the methods and strategies used by state authorities and employers to counter outbreaks of labour militancy on a global scale. It adopts a long-term chronology that sheds light on the shocks and strains that marked industrial societies during their turbulent transition into mass politics from the bitter social conflicts of the pre-war period, through the epochal tremors of war and revolution, and the violent spasms of the 1920s and 1930s. Offering a new angle of vision to examine the violent transition to mass politics in industrial societies, this is of great interest to scholars of policing, unionism and striking in the modern era.

Im Gegensatz zu der noch immer vertretenen Auffassung, Antisemitismus habe in der Selbstdarstellung und Wahrnehmung der NSDAP vor 1933 nur am Rande eine Rolle gespielt, zeigt Hannah Ahlheims Studie, wie die Nationalsozialisten auf regionaler Ebene bereits während der Weimarer Republik antisemitische Boykotte offen und selbstbewusst als "Werbemaßnahme" betrieben haben. Der staatlich verordnete Boykott vom 1. April 1933 nahm diese Bewegung "von unten" auf und intensivierte sie. Auch wenn die Maßnahmen nicht immer den von den Nationalsozialisten erwünschten unmittelbaren wirtschaftlichen Schaden verursachten, waren sie aus der Sicht der betroffenen Juden nur allzu "erfolgreich": Sie führten zu kleinen, aber folgenreichen Verschiebungen in der Behandlung jüdischer Geschäftspartner und halfen, radikal antisemitische Propaganda mit verbreiteten Ressentiments zu verbinden, trieben die Ausgrenzung der Juden vor Ort entscheidend voran und waren so Teil eines Prozesses, der im "sozialen Tod" und schließlich in der physischen Vernichtung der Juden gipfelte. Die Arbeit wurde mit dem Ernst Fraenkel Prize in Contemporary History der Wiener Library 2009 ausgezeichnet.
