Sie wird somit als bestimmender Ausgangspunkt der modernen Welt verstanden. Die Französische Revolution wird gemeinhin in ihrer Bedeutung als historisches Schlüsselereignis höher eingeschätzt als die Amerikanische Revolution von 1776, auch wenn diese in der Entwicklung der Demokratie viele Inhalte des französischen Weges vorwegnahm und anregte. So auch die renommierte Politikwissenschaftlerin Hannah ARENDT in ihrem Werk „Über die Revolution“, in welchem sie die beiden Revolutionen interpretiert und miteinander vergleicht. Arendt betont Kapitel einerseits den großen Einfluss der US-amerikanischen Gesellschaft vor der Amerikanischen Revolution auf die europäischen Völker, bewertet sie aber andererseits als für die weiteren europäischen Revolutionen folgenlos. Eine Hauptursache für diese höhere Bedeutungszuschreibung liegt in dem Umstand, dass die Amerikanische Revolution zwar durchaus eine politische, aber keine soziale Revolution war. Sie war ausschließlich von dem Ziel „Liberty“ bestimmt, die Französischen Revolution hingegen wurde unter dem Leitspruch „Liberté, Ègalité, Fraterite“ geführt und war wesentlich radikaler, gewalttätiger und nachhaltiger. Währender der Ursprung der Amerikanischen Revolution im Auflehnen und Loslösen der Kolonien gegenüber dem Mutterland lag und durch die Worte „No taxation without representation“ ihren politischen Charakter betont, markiert die Französische Revolution einen Wendpunkt in Europa, da nicht nur ein bestehendes politisches Herrschaftssystem, der Absolutismus und das Ancien Régime, gestürzt wurde sondern eine ganze Gesellschaftsordnung, die des Feudalismus, zu Fall kam. Die geschichtswissenschaftliche und gesellschaftspolitische Überbetonung der Bedeutung der Französischen Revolution ist zum Teil in der geographischen und politischen Isolation Amerikas am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts begründet und nicht zuletzt auch Ausdruck einer eurozentristischen Weltsicht, die viele Jahrhunderte das europäische Denken bestimmt hatte.

Wilhelm Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was a German composer, conductor, music theorist, and essayist, primarily known for his operas (later called music dramas). Wagner s musical style is often considered the epitome of classical music s Romantic period, due to its unprecedented exploration of emotional expression. He transformed musical thought through his idea of Gesamtkunstwerk (total artwork), the synthesis of all the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, epitomized by his monumental four-opera cycle The Ring of the Niebelung (1876). Wagner even went so far as to build his own opera-house to try to stage these works as he had imagined them. His literary friendship with Franz Liszt led to a long-lived correspondence later compiled in the two volumes of Corrrespondence of Wagner and Liszt (1889); a book that was attributed to both musicians. Among his other famous works are Tristan and Isolde, which broke important new musical ground, My Life (in two volumes) (1880), and The Flying Dutchman.

"One might say that where Religion becomes artificial, it is reserved for Art to save the spirit of religion." With these words Richard Wagner began "Religion and Art" (1880), one of his most passionate essays. That passion made Wagner himself a central icon in the growing cult of art. Wagner felt that he lived in an age of spiritual crisis. "It can but rouse our apprehension, to see the progress of the art-of-war departing from the springs of moral force, and turning more and more to the mechanical," he wrote. In response to the frightening progress of dynamite and steel, Wagner adopted the role of the Tone Poet Seer, who reveals the inexpressible in concert halls and cleanses souls in waves of symhonic revelation. "Religion and Art" is the pivot of the works collected here. This edition includes the complete volume 6 of the 1897 translation of Wagner's works commissioned by the London Wagner Society. William Ashton Ellis is one of the most important translators of nineteenth-century musicology. In addition to his monumental translation of Wagner's prose works, he translated Wagner's correspondence with Franz Lizst, Mathilde Wesendonck, and Wagner's own family. Ellis died in 1919.

A philosophical investigation into the connections between trust and violence The limiting of violence through state powers is one of the central projects of the modern age. Why then have recent centuries been so bloody? In Trust and Violence, acclaimed German intellectual and public figure Jan Philipp Reemtsma demonstrates that the aim of decreasing and deterring violence has gone hand in hand with the misleading idea that violence is abnormal and beyond comprehension. We would be far better off, Reemtsma argues, if we acknowledged the disturbing fact that violence is normal. At the same time, Reemtsma contends that violence cannot be fully understood without delving into the concept of trust. Not in violence, but in trust, rests the foundation of true power. Reemtsma makes his case with a wide-ranging history of ideas about violence, from ancient philosophy through Shakespeare and Schiller to Michel Foucault, and by considering specific cases of extreme violence from medieval torture to the Holocaust and beyond. In the midst of this gloomy account of human tendencies, Reemtsma shrewdly observes that even dictators have to sleep at night and cannot rely on violence alone to ensure their safety.
