Zur Inhalt: In der von Armut geprägten Melchiorgasse im Wien des Jahres 1921 gibt es neben verarmten Bürgern und Lumpenproletariat nur zwei wohlhabende Menschen: Den Fleischer Josef Geiringer und Frau Greifer, die einen Modesalon mit angeschlossenem Nachtklub betreibt. In diesen Nachtklub zieht es die wohlhabenden Bürger Wiens. An den Nachtklub angegliedert ist das Stundenhotel "Merkl", in dem u.a. Frauen ihren bei Frau Greifer aufgenommenen Kredit mit sexuellen Dienstleistungen abbezahlen. Während sich die einen durch einen Aktienbetrug bereichern, fallen andere dadurch in die Armut. Maximilian Hugo Bettauer (1872-1925), war ein österreichischer Schriftsteller und Drehbuchautor. Bettauer spezialisierte sich auf Kriminalromane mit sozialem Engagement. Populär wurden seine Romane auch dadurch, dass ihre Schauplätze nicht allein Wien, sondern auch New York und Berlin waren. Er gehörte damit nicht nur zu den umstrittensten, sondern auch erfolgreichsten Schriftstellern seiner Zeit.
