Globalisierung ist ein Prozess, der durch das Zusammenwachsen sozialer, ökologischer, ökonomischer, politischer und kultureller Beziehungen gekennzeichnet ist. Der Begriff wird nicht klar definiert, bleibt in seiner Beschreibung stets schwammig. Einig ist man sich nur in dem Punkt, dass sie unabwendbar und nicht mehr zu stoppen ist, unabhängig davon, ob man den Prozess als gut oder schlecht erachtet. Die ökonomische Dimension der Globalisierung ist die wohl am meisten in den Nachrichten vertretene, spricht man doch stets davon, die Märkte beruhigen zu müssen. Auf diese Art und Weise personalisiert, erscheinen die Märkte als übermenschliche Wesen, deren Willen man sich zu fügen hat und nicht als Instrument zum Güteraustausch. Übermenschliches wird in der Religion als göttlich definiert, hier könnte der Skeptiker also eine Analogie zwischen Wirtschaft und Religion feststellen. Die dominante Stellung der Religion innerhalb der Kultur wurde von anderen Kulturbereichen ersetzt bis die Wirtschaft, bis einschließlich heute, der dominante Bereich der westlichen Kultur wurde. Da sich Kulturen als Handlungs- und Interpretationsgemeinschaften definieren lassen, was bedeutet, dass, sie sich Sinn schaffen, stellt sich die Frage, ob Sinnkonstituierung und -erfahrung im Bereich der Wirtschaft vollzogen wird, da diese der dominante Kulturbereich ist. Durch Sinn entsteht Identität, die Schaffung einer solchen ist wiederum ein Merkmal von Religionsgemeinschaften, so gängige Religionstheorien. Inwieweit lassen sich bei genauerer Betrachtung des Prozesses weitere religiöse Elemente erkennen? Bestehen Analogien mit der Definition einer sekundären Religion? Dieser Frage wird eine zentrale Stellung in der Arbeit zugeschrieben. Wichtig für ihre Beantwortung ist es, festzustellen, ob der Wahrheitsanspruch sekundärer Religionen und die damit verbundene Expansionslegitimation auf die wirtschaftlichen Prozesse der Globalisierung anwendbar sind. Denn die Expansionslegitimation ist ein wichtiges Merkmal sekundärer Religionen. Weiterhin wird die Verheißung des Kapitalismus behandelt. Die dem Kapitalismus inhärente Verheißung verspricht eine diesseitige Erlösung. Allein das Wort „Verheißung“ ist ein religiöser Begriff. Diese Verheißung scheint Gegenstand der „Eschatologie“ des globalisierten Kapitalismus zu sein. Um dies zu begründen wird sich in dieser Arbeit mit der religiösen Heilslehre beschäftigt und Analogien zu ihr gebildet werden.

Zuckerman is one of the characters from Roth’s books, the hero of the trilogy Zuckerman Bound (1985) and some short stories. He is a fictional character whom Roth addresses in the prologue to The Facts, asking for advice concerning the publication of what Roth calls the result of “...writing a book absolutely backward, taking what I have already imagined and, as it were, desiccating it, so as to restore my experience to the original, prefictionalized factuality.“ (FACTS, 3) Reading Philip Roth in a context of postmodern literature in America I have come to wonder what it actually is he himself is trying to do with his writing. Comparing Roth’s early narratives to more recent works I am tempted to say that a development can be observed towards an incorporation of narrative features which can be described as ‘postmodern’, i.e. that there are strong influences of a ‘postmodern reality’ in the work of Philip Roth, although he himself can probably not be called a postmodern writer in the strict meaning of the term. Here, of course, already appears a major problem for my assumption: What is ‘postmodern writing’ at all? Are there common features shared by (all) the representatives of postmodernism which could justify the application of such a classification? And if so, what precisely are these features and how can they be described?

The conceptual history of cognitive science remains for the most part unwritten. In this groundbreaking book, Jean-Pierre Dupuy—one of the principal architects of cognitive science in France—provides an important chapter: the legacy of cybernetics. Contrary to popular belief, Dupuy argues, cybernetics represented not the anthropomorphization of the machine but the mechanization of the human. The founding fathers of cybernetics—some of the greatest minds of the twentieth century, including John von Neumann, Norbert Wiener, Warren McCulloch, and Walter Pitts—intended to construct a materialist and mechanistic science of mental behavior that would make it possible at last to resolve the ancient philosophical problem of mind and matter. Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? How do people whose identities are fundamentally rooted in their relationship to a particular river renegotiate that relationship when the river is dammed to generate hydro-power or polluted by mining activities?
