Nach dem 1921 erschienen Buch von W.T. Linskill, St. Andrews Ghost Stories - Geistergeschichten aus St. Andrews. Wer Geistergeschichten der üblichen Art erwartet, würde hier enttäuscht werden, deshalb wurde auch 'Die Geister von St. Andrews' als deutscher Titel gewählt. Hier geht es vielmehr darum, die 'Geister- und Spukszene' dieser schottischen Kleinstadt kennenzulernen, wenn auch am Schluss ins Humoristische verzogen. St. Andrews ist nicht irgendeine Stadt an der schottischen Ostküste in der Grafschaft Fife. Berühmt ist sie für ihre traditionsreiche Universität - die Studenten stellen dort etwa ein Drittel der Bevölkerung - und natürlich auch als Heimat des Golfsports. Im Mittelalter war die Stadt religiöses Zentrum in Schottland. Ihr Namensgeber, der Heilige Andreas, immerhin einer der Apostel, ist noch sehr präsent. Seine Reliquien wurden einst in die Stadt gebracht, und man findet dort noch einen Zahn, einen Armknochen, eine Kniescheibe und drei seiner Finger von ihm. Das Andreaskreuz in der schottischen Flagge geht auf ihn zurück. Die malerische Lage an der Nordsee macht St. Andrews zum lohnenden Ziel für Touristen, die Gegend, ihre Gebäude und Ruinen verbergen so manche schaurige Geschichte, an denen Schottland ohnehin nicht arm ist.
