Das Rheinland gehörte seit dem Mittelalter zu den bedeutendsten Siedlungsräumen von Juden in Europa. Dieses Buch bietet einen detailreichen Einblick in die wechselvolle Geschichte des jüdischen Lebens vom Mittelalter bis heute: In Köln, dem Zentralort für die jüdischen Niederlassungen im Nordwesten des Reiches, und in anderen rheinischen Städten existierten schon im 10. und 11. Jahrhundert blühende jüdische Gemeinden. Im städtischen Alltag gehörten grausame Verfolgungen ebenso zur Lebensrealität wie das nachbarschaftliche Zusammenleben. In der Frühen Neuzeit war jüdisches Leben am Rhein stark von den Vorgaben der Territorialherren und ihren unterschiedlichen Judenordnungen abhängig. Mit der Zugehörigkeit der Rheinlande zu Preußen vollzog sich dann ein Prozess der zunehmenden Verrechtlichung und Akkulturation für die jüdische Bevölkerung. Unter der Herrschaft der Nationalsozialisten wurde auch hier der stufenweise Prozess von der Entrechtung bis zur physischen Vernichtung der Juden umgesetzt. Nach 1945 konnte sich das jüdische Leben am Rhein auf Dauer etablieren. Mit dem Anwachsen der jüdischen Gemeinden nach 1990 entwickelte sich eine neue, auf die Zukunft hin orientierte Dimension jüdischen Lebens im Rheinland.

Traces the history of Jews in Westphalia during the 11th-15th centuries. Discusses various aspects of Jewish life and of the policies of the rulers in regard to the Jews. Relates extensively to acts of antisemitism - blood libels, host desecration accusations, riots, and expulsions. Reports on pogroms which followed the Black Death epidemic, in 1350, during which ca. 900 Jews were murdered. Although in 1372 a community was established again in Dortmund, and in 1500 in Lippe, Westphalian Jewry did not reach its former number up to the end of the medieval period. This fact was also related to the destruction of the nearby community of Köln in 1424. States that with the ruin of the Rhenisch basis, Westphalia's Jewry withered and lost its impact.
