Excerpt from Die Geschichte der Religion Da nun die eigentlich geschichtlichen Erinnerungen bei dem Volk Israel nicht über die Zeit seiner Erzvater zuruckreichen, hier aber bereits der Gegensatz von Polytheismus und Mono theismus uns entgegentritt, so haben wir auch von dieser Seite aus keine direkte geschichtliche Aufklärung über den Ursprung weder des einen noch des andern also überhaupt keine (geschichtliche) Nachricht über die Urform der Religion zu erwarten. Wir sind daher darauf angewiesen, aus den einzelnen Religionen selbst, sowie sie in geschichtlicher Zeit uns vorliegen, Rückschlüsse zu ziehen auf die Art und Weise ihrer Entstehung und hierauf Hypothesen uber die vorgeschicht liche, zuletzt über die uranfängliche Form der Religion zu gründen. Und zwar werden wir einer solchen Hypothese den Vorzug vor den andern zu geben geneigt sein, welche am ehesten geeignet ist, aus der vorangestellten Einen Reli gionsform des vorgeschichtlichen Anfangs die so weit ausein andergehende geschichtliche Entwickelung der verschiedenen Religionen erklärlich zu machen.
