Die Geschichtspsalmen written by Judith Gärtner and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Bible categories.

English summary: In the theological study of the later Psalms, the major lines of Old Testament theology converge as in a concave mirror. A pivotal question here is the reflection of their own history, on which the historical Psalms 78, 105, 106, 135 and 136, as they are classified by researchers, placed their emphasis. Each of the historical Psalms creates memories in its own specific way of salvific primordial time of the exodus and the possession of the land in order to reinterpret their own present time in prayer. Judith Gartner describes this identity-forming function of history is in connection with a discourse in cultural studies on collective memory. Against the backdrop of current research on the Psalms, the author shows that the historical Psalms are key hermeneutic texts in the Psalter and analyzes them in view of the composition and redaction of the Psalter. In doing so, she creates new perspectives on the origins and the theology of the Psalter.

Geschichte Und Gebet written by Anja Klein and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-19 with Religion categories.

English summary: In this volume, Anja Klein presents a literary and theological historical analysis of the historical psalms Exodus 15, Psalms 78, 105, 106, 114, 135 and 136. As well as providing an editorial differentiation of the texts on the basis of their chronology, she attempts to clarify references to the Scriptures in each individual psalm. She shows that the reception of the biblical story begins with the Song of the Sea in Exodus 15 within the context of the narrative itself and from there finds its way into the book of Psalms. This line of interpretation continues in the texts of the Psalterium with varying points of focus, resulting in an ongoing discourse on the biblical narrative. This dynamic form of interpretation can best be described as a process of quest for identity and identity determination by the Jews of the Bible who thereby assure themselves of their history in their God's presence. As prayer texts, the historical psalms evoke a ritualistic essence and allow for the adoption of a historically grounded identity in the recital and praying of the psalms.

The Divine Image written by Jill Middlemas and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-09 with Religion categories.

Although attempts to understand the growth of aniconism focus on the Pentateuchal legal material, scholars increasingly make reference to the prophetic literature to illuminate the debate. Jill Middlemas provides the first comprehensive analysis of the prophets with attention to rhetorical strategies that reflect anti-iconic thought and promote iconoclasm. After illuminating the idol polemics, which is the rhetoric most often associated with aniconism, she draws out how prophecy also exposes a reticence towards cultic symbols and mental images of Yahweh. At the same time the theme of incomparability as well as the use of metaphor and multiple imaging, paradoxically, reveal additional ways to express aniconic belief or the destabilization of a single divine image. Middlemas' analysis of prophetic aniconism sheds new light on interpretations of the most iconic expression in the Old Testament, the imago dei passages in Genesis, where God is said to create humanity in the divine image.

Historical And Biblical Israel written by Reinhard G. Kratz and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-17 with Religion categories.

At the center of this book lies a fundamental yet unanswered question: under which historical and sociological conditions and in what manner the Hebrew Bible became an authoritative tradition, that is, holy scripture and the canon of Judaism as well as Christianity. Reinhard G. Kratz answers this very question by distinguishing between historical and biblical Israel. This foundational and, for the arrangement of the book, crucial distinction affirms that the Israel of biblical tradition, i.e. the sacred history (historia sacra) of the Hebrew Bible, cannot simply be equated with the history of Israel and Judah. Thus, Kratz provides a synthesis of both the Israelite and Judahite history and the genesis and development of biblical tradition in two separate chapters, though each area depends directly and inevitably upon the other. These two distinct perspectives on Israel are then confronted and correlated in a third chapter, which constitutes an area intimately connected with the former but generally overlooked apart from specialized inquiries: those places and "archives" that either yielded Jewish documents and manuscripts (Elephantine, Al-Yahudu, Qumran) or are associated conspicuously with the tradition of the Hebrew Bible (Mount Gerizim, Jerusalem, Alexandria). Here, the various epigraphic and literary evidence for the history of Israel and Judah comes to the fore. Such evidence sometimes represents Israel's history; at other times it reflects its traditions; at still others it reflects both simultaneously. The different sources point to different types of Judean or Jewish identity in Persian and Hellenistic times.

Re Reading The Scriptures written by Christoph Levin and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Bible categories.

This volume contains 15 papers written by Christoph Levin between 2001 and 2011, four of them unpublished. One main focus is on the Pentateuch, mainly on the oldest comprehensive narrative source, the Yahwist, which was written at the beginning of the Jewish diaspora. A second focus is on the books of Kings, on their chronological structure as well as on the final two chapters 2 Kgs 24-25. Christoph Levin also deals with the Israelite religion in the time of the monarchy, the origins of biblical Covenant theology, and the Old Testament attitude to poverty. All the papers are based on a detailed investigation of the literary growth of the biblical text. The author shows that the Old Testament as we know it originated from a process of continual re-reading during the Second Temple period.

A translated text is laced with interpretive assumptions. By focusing on the Septuagint, J. Ross Wagner highlights the creative theology hidden in translation. His model couples patient investigation of the act of translation with careful attention to the translated texts' rhetorical features. Wagner focuses upon Isaiah's opening vision, clarifying its language, elucidating its character, and contextualizing its message. Reading the Sealed Book demonstrates how such translations serve as distinctive contributions to theology and reveal the contours of Jewish identity in the Hellenistic diaspora.

Wisdom Epistemology In The Psalter written by John Kartje and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-14 with Religion categories.

We present a comparative epistemological analysis of the wisdom motifs in Psalms 1, 73, 90, and 107. These texts were selected on the basis of their epistemological content (each confronts the relationship between virtue and prosperity), and their canonical placement within the Psalter (each begins one of the Psalter’s five “Books”). We explore the implications of their respective epistemological features for our understanding of the canonical structure of the Psalter. After developing a diagnostic method for the identification and analysis of the epistemological features within a biblical text, we apply it to each of the four psalms, and discuss their epistemological qualities with respect to their canonical placement in the Psalter. We find that an epistemic progression develops across the canonical ordering of the four psalms. While the psalmists are increasingly forthright in acknowledging the moral paradox that the righteous often suffer, while the wicked can prosper, they engage this paradox with ever more sophisticated responses. Although Yhwh is ultimately the source of all wisdom, human beings can facilitate their acquisition of knowledge by seeking him out intentionally, by questioning him directly, and by observing him with a heart focused on learning.

Frederik Poulsen investigates the role of the Old Testament in biblical theology. Analyzing the works of Brevard Childs and Hans Hubner, he addresses main issues regarding the different versions of the Old Testament (the Hebrew Bible and the Greek Septuagint) and the significance of the New Testament's use of the Old. The author explores the interpretative implications of these issues by focusing extensively on Isaiah 42:1-9. The Hebrew version as such is ambiguous regarding the servant figure being portrayed, his identity, and his task. The Septuagint renders several key terms and statements differently and the reception of the passage in the New Testament reveals a manifold of diverse interpretations. Common to all versions is the servant's role as a mediator between God and the nations. Frederik Poulsen shows that this central task is constantly being reapplied to new servant figures.
