Dieses Buch ist aus einer Vorlesung zur Einführung in die Techniksoziologie am Institut für Soziologie der TU Dresden hervorgegangen. Mein ganz be sonderer Dank gilt Thomas Stückemann (TU Dresden, Institut für Soziolo gie), der mich durch ebenso beharrliche wie scharfsinnige Kritik dazu ange halten hat, das Konzept des Buches so klar wie möglich zu präsentieren und gleichzeitig den gewählten Theorierahmen über alle Kapitel hinweg durch zuhalten. Ich bedanke ich mich auch bei Johannes Rohbeck (TU Dresden, Institut für Philosophie), der das ganze Manuskript gelesen und dessen viel fältige Kritik vor allem der Kapitel über die Geschichte des philosophischen Technikbegriffs wertvolle Anregungen geliefert hat. Ohne die politische Ökologiebewegung wäre die vorliegende Ar beit vermutlich nicht entstanden. In den ökologischen Debatten besitzt die Kritik der Technik, des ökonomisch bestimmten Fort schritts und der wissenschaftlichen Weltbeherrschung eine zen trale Bedeutung. Der technisch-rationalen Beherrschung von Na tur und Gesellschaft wird eine Option für Gefühl und Leben, Ganzheitlichkeit und Subjektivität entgegengesetzt. Aus derar tigen Optionen werden die Umrisse einer anderen Gesellschaft entworfen; Alternativen zur herrschenden Erziehung, zu den Formen und Inhalten der Politik oder der Kulturindustrie kann man mit jenen Optionen begründen. Auf merkwürdige Weise ver schwimmen dabei die traditionellen Grenzen zwischen links und rechts, sozialistischen und konservativen Vorstellungen. Ist die heutige ökologische Bewegung mit einer kulturkonservativen Traditionslinie verbunden, die auf eine unaufgeklärte Weise von der Weimarer Republik in den Faschismus hineinreichte?Gibt es auch Verbindungen zwischen der neueren, ökologischen Tech nikkritik und dieser Tradition? Das ursprüngliche Programm meiner Arbeit war von derartigen Fragen bestimmt. Ich hatte die Absicht, zwei Problemkomplexe zu bearbeiten: Erstens die kritische Rekonstruktion der kulturkonservativen Technikkritik des Präfaschismus und die in ihr enthaltene Ge sellschaftskritik. Dies sollte Aufschluß darüber geben, über welche Begriffe und Argumentationsmuster sich eine Kontinui tät zwischen präfaschistischer Technik- und Kulturkritik und nationalsozialistischer Technik- und Gesellschaftsauffassung herstellte. In der spärlichen wissenschaftlichen Literatur zu dieser Fragestellung wird eine solche Kontinuität weitgehend in Abrede gestellt und allenfalls ein gemeinsamer Nenner in antidemokratischen Haltungen konstatiert.

Modern molecular technology in the so-called life sciences (biology as weil as medicine) allows today to approach and manipulate living beings in ways and to an extent wh ich not too long aga seemed Utopian. The empirical progress promises further and even more radical developments in the future, and it is at least often claimed that this kind of research will have tremendeous etfects on and for all of humanity, for example in the areas of food production, transplantation medicine (including stem cell research and xenotransplantation), (therapeutic) genetic manipulation and (cell-line) cloning (of cell lines or tissues), and of biodiversity conservation-strategies. At least in Western, industrialized countries the development of modern sciences led to a steady increase of human health, well-being and quality of life. However, with the move to make the human body itself an object of scientific research interests, the respective scientific descriptions resulted in changes in the image that human beings have of themselves. Scientific progress has led to a startling loss of traditional human self-understanding. This development is in contrast to an under standing according to which the question what it means to be "human" is treated in the realm of philosophy. And indeed, a closer look reveals that - without denying the value of scientitic progress - science cannot replace the philosophical approach to anthropological questions.

There is a peculiar dissonance in innovation research. On the one hand, the label innovation is applied to almost everything: new products, processes, services, methods, techniques. Even the diffusion of innovations to all spheres of society is called innovation. On the other hand, we find that the main focus of innovation research is still on bringing technology to market. This dissonance provoked the central questions discussed at the 2nd International Conference on Indicators and Concepts of Innovation (ICICI 2008) on «Non-technological and non-economic innovations and their impact on economy» hosted by the Competence Centre for Management at the Berne School of Business and Administration: What forms and dimensions of non-technological and non-economic innovations can nonetheless be found both theoretically and empirically? What impact do these innovations have on the economy? Are there actually innovations without a non-technological and non-economic dimension, viz. purely technological or economic innovations? Consisting of selected answers to these questions, this volume presents international scholarly approaches beyond the «technology goes economic market» mainstream of innovation research. They are integrated in a theoretical framework for the analysis of socially robust innovations, i.e. innovations that succeed on more than one market and are therefore both more sustainable and more profitable. The 2nd International Conference on Indicators and Concepts of Innovation (ICICI 2008) has been supported by the SCOPES programme of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
