Was die Europäer als Instrument der Freiheits- und Friedenssicherung schätzen, erzeugt jenseits des Atlantiks Angst vor Abhängigkeit und Machtverlust. Statt dessen setzt die amerikanische Regierung auf von der internationalen Gemeinschaft nicht getragene Feldzüge gegen feindliche Schurkenstaaten. Scheinbar unüberwindbare Differenzen, die für transatlantischen Zündstoff sorgen. Ein sinnvoller Umgang mit diesen Unterschieden ist möglich, setzt jedoch eine Auseinandersetzung mit ihren ideengeschichtlichen Ursachen voraus. Der Westfälische Frieden von 1648 begründete in Europa eine Entwicklung hin zu einem auf Souveränitätsverzicht beruhenden Nationalstaat. In der neuen Welt markierte indes eine dem Staat gegenüber dominierende Gesellschaft den Bruch mit den Traditionen der europäischen Mutterländer. Sollte das Recht des Stärkeren auch in Europa die "Stärke des Rechts" ablösen, gefährdet der alte Kontinent seine Zukunftsfähigkeit. Will man die bewährten Errungenschaften nicht preisgeben, kann eine Reflexion der Differenzen im Verständnis von Staat, Nation und Religion nicht ausbleiben. Seit 1957 gibt es die Militärseelsorge in der Bundeswehr. Die deutschen Streitkräfte haben sich seither vielfach verändert, weiterentwickelt und nicht zuletzt auch professionalisiert. Zu den größten Veränderungen der letzten Jahrzehnte zählen, dass die Bundeswehr mittlerweile eine Einsatzarmee ist, dass Frauen in allen Teilbereichen als Soldatinnen dienen dürfen und dass die allgemeine Wehrpflicht ausgesetzt wurde. All dies geht mit neuen Fragen, Aufgaben und Herausforderungen einher, denen sich auch die Militärpfarrerinnen und Militärpfarrer stellen. Sie begleiten Soldatinnen und Soldaten in ihrem Dienst in den heimischen Kasernen, im Rahmen von Manöverübungen, auf den Schiffen der Marine oder im Feldlager im Auslandseinsatz. Dabei tritt deutlich hervor, worauf es bei der Militärseelsorge vor allem ankommt: auf die Seelsorge. [Critical Solidarity. A Theory of Military Pastoral Care] Military chaplaincy has existed in the Bundeswehr since 1957. Since then, the German armed forces have undergone many changes, evolved and, not least, become more professional. Among the biggest changes in recent decades are the facts that the Bundeswehr is now an operational army, that women are allowed to serve as soldiers in all branches and that general conscription has been suspended. All of this is accompanied by new questions, tasks and challenges, which military pastors also face. They accompany soldiers in their service in the barracks at home, during maneuver exercises, on the ships of the navy or in the field camps abroad. In this way, it becomes clear what is most important in military chaplaincy: pastoral care.
