Die Untersuchung erfaßt vollständig die Rezeption von Episoden, Gestalten und Motiven aus den simplicianischen und anderen satirisch-pikaresken Werken Grimmelshausens in der fiktionalen Literatur (Belletristik, Textsammlungen) der deutschen Romantik. In der Einleitung werden Thema, Grundlage und Aufgabe der Arbeit definiert. In Kap. I wird dargelegt, warum sich gerade in der Periode der Romantik eine breite Grimmelshausen-Rezeption entfalten konnte. Es wird nachgewiesen, daß die romantische Beschäftigung mit diesem Schriftsteller Teil einer universellen und progressiven Kulturrezeption war (Versuch einer neuen Bestimmung des Begriffs Romantik). In Kap. II wird die Überlieferung von Grimmelshausens Identität und Oeuvre im Zeitalter der Aufklärung umrissen (Volksbuchautor Samuel Greifensohn).Den Kern des Buches bildet die eingehende Analyse von vier umfangreichen Themen aus dem Bereich der kreativen (literarisch-ästhetischen) Rezeption. Es betrifft die Bewertung, Gestaltung und Umdeutung von vier epischen Figuren, die im realen Leben des 17. Jahrhunderts eine völlig untergeordnete Rolle spielten, aber als literarische Gestalten in verschiedenen romantischen Konkretisationen von Grimmelshausen-Texten auf emanzipatorische Weise aktualisiert werden. Es sind der schizophrene Jupiter, der weltabgewandte Einsiedel, die entehrte Courage und der verteufelte Bärenhäuter. Kap. III handelt über die Jupiter-Episode bei Tieck und Haken, Kap. IV über das Nachtigall-Lied bei Tieck, Brentano und Eichendorff, Kap. V über die Zigeuner-Episode bei Arnim und Eichendorff, Kap. VI über die Bärenhäuter-Geschichte bei Brentano, Arnim und Kerner. Bei jedem Rezeptionsfall wird der formale und inhaltliche Zusammenhang des verarbeiteten Grimmelshausen-Textes mit dem Kontext des romantischen Werkes herausgestellt, werden die verschiedenen Hintergründe des Rezeptionsverfahrens sowie Funktion und Färbung des erneuerten Grimmelshausen-Textes erörtert. Auch Verschlingungen oder Verkettungen mit Gestalten, Episoden oder Motiven aus anderen Werken der altdeutschen Zeit (vor allem aus der satirisch-pikaresken Romanliteratur des 17. Jahrhunderts) werden berücksichtigt. Die vier Kernkapitel werden jeweils mit einer Einleitung zum barocken Originaltext eröffnet.Die übrigen Fälle kreativer Rezeption werden aus textimmanenter und motivgeschichtlicher Perspektive beschrieben. In Kap. VII wird die Adaption des Motivkomplexes Alraunwurzel - Galgenmännlein - Spiritus familiaris behandelt. In Kap. VIII wird die Rezeption sonstiger Motive (Vogelnest, Teutscher Michel, Simplicius) erläutert.Kap. Is the pícaro, the roguish hero of early modern Spanish adventure fiction, a 'real man'? What position does he hold in the gender hierarchy of his fictional social context? Why is the pícara so 'non-female'? What effect has her gender constitution on her fictional social context? In terms of a gendered subject, the picaresque figure has hardly been analyzed so far. Although scholars have recognized it as a transgressive and subversive model, the 'queer' effect of the figure is yet to be examined. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the German literary establishment considered the novel the contemptible entertainment of the uneducated. By the end of the century, the novel had eclipsed the epic poem as the most appropriate genre for depicting humankind and its preoccupations. The story of the novel's emergence as a respected and productive artistic genre is intimately bound up with the vicissitudes of the most popular of all German baroque works, Hans Jacob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen's (1621/22-1676) Der abentheurliche Simplicissimus: Teutsch (1668/69). Between 1756 and 1785, Simplicissimus quietly found its way into bookshops three times in radically different forms, in adaptations that were not, as critics have asserted, arbitrary, but quite purposeful. This investigation discusses the ways in which this canonical text was reworked to reflect the thinking of leading - and warring - Enlightenment aestheticians. At the genre war's end, the novel emerged triumphant and Simplicissimus adaptations had been instrumental in securing the victory; the multi-faceted Simplicissimus had served as a vehicle for reifying theoretical positions in the conflicts. For, as the social and aesthetic climate shifted radically, Grimmelshausen's work not only survived, but took on new life in the most important literary campaign of the century.

A Space of Anxietyengages with a body of German-Jewish literature that, from the beginning of the century onwards, explores notions of identity and kinship in the context of migration, exile and persecution. The study offers an engaging analysis of how Freud, Kafka, Roth, Drach and Hilsenrath employ, to varying degrees, the travel paradigm to question those borders and boundaries that define the space between the self and the other. A Space of Anxietyargues that from Freud to Hilsenrath, German-Jewish literature emerges from an ambivalent space of enunciation which challenges the great narrative of an historical identity authenticated by an originary past. Inspired by postcolonial and psychoanalytic theories, the author shows that modern German-Jewish writers inhabit a Third Space which poses an alternative to an understanding of culture as a homogeneous tradition based on (national) unity.By endeavouring to explore this third space in examples of modern German-Jewish literature, the volume also aims to contribute to recent efforts to rewriting literary history. In retracing the inherent ambivalence in how German-Jewish literature situates itself in cultural discourse, this study focuses on how this literature subverts received notions of identity and racial boundaries. This book opens the debate about German history in the long term – about how ideas and political forms are traceable across what historians have taken to be the sharp breaks of German history. Smith argues that current historiography has become ever more focused on the twentieth century, and on twentieth-century explanations for the catastrophes at the center of German history. Against conventional wisdom, he considers continuities - nation and nationalism, religion and religious exclusion, racism and violence - that are the center of the German historical experience and that have long histories.
