The Chronicler distinguishes between "traditional prophets" and "inspired messengers", and thereby highlights a radical transition in the meaning of the "word of God" which takes place in the post-exilic period. The Chronicler summarizes his perspective in 2 Chron. 36.16, saying that Israel rejected "his prophets", "the messengers of God", and "his word" (i.e. Torah). This distinction is reflected in the forms and functions of prophetic speech in the books of Chronicles. Thus, the prophets speak to the king, and the inspired messengers (e.g. priests, levites) speak to the people. The prophets interpret narrative events for the king; they explain how God acts. The inspired messengers exhort the people, admonishing them how they should act. The prophets' speeches usually do not use any kind of inspiration formula, but the inspired messengers' speeches are prefaced with possession formulas. These possession formulas are not typical of classical prophecy and mark the rise of a new kind of prophecy, namely, the inspired interpretation of texts. These inspired messengers are thus forerunners of the inspired interpreters of scripture in Qumran, early Christianity and Judaism.

Josephus Flavius’s life was defined by the Jewish war against Rome, about which he wrote his first book as a friend of the imperial family, enjoying the benefits of an end to the conflict. But this dichotomy between war and peace defined not only the life of our author but also the history of all peoples in Late Antiquity, so it is not surprising that war and peace also play a central role in his second book. A broader theme could hardly have been chosen for this volume, which naturally brought with it the diversity of the studies it contains. At a conference in May 2022 at Selye János University in Komárom – "Peace and War in Josephus" – a distinguished, international group of scholars took up this theme, including Tal Ilan (Israel), Steve Mason (Canada), Jiří Hoblík (Czech Republic), and five Hungarian colleagues: Tibor Grüll, Ádám Vér, József Zsengellér, István Karasszon, and Viktor Kókai-Nagy. Their papers in English or German are complemented by three additional papers from Carson Bay (Switzerland), Marin Meiser (Germany), and David R. Edwards (USA). Together, their work ranges from the historical and literary context to the political and philosophical thought of the author.

English summary: Armin Lange examines the innerprophetic conflicts as documented by Amos, Micah, Isaiah, Zephaniah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Zechariah as well as Lamentations. These texts attest to a development from prophetic word to prophetic tradition. While in preexilic times actual prophecy and prophetic tradition coexisted, in postexilic times prophetic tradition became dominant and actual prophecy marginal. The reason for this development lies in the experiences of late preexilic and early postexilic times. When in 520-515 BCE, during the rebuilding of the Jerusalem Temple, the Zionistic shalom prophecy was perpetuated - a prophetic message which in the eyes of Deuteronomism was at least partly responsible for the catastrophe of 587 BCE - actual prophecy as such was in dubious repute. In its stead prophetic interpretation and rewriting of older prophecy became the means of prophetic revelation. German description: Wie konnte sich aus den innerprophetischen Konflikten der vorexilischen Zeit in nachexilischer Zeit eine Ablehnung aller gegenwartigen und zukunftigen Prophetie zugunsten der Auslegung autoritativer Texte entwickeln? Wahrend aktuelle Prophetie und Tradentenprophetie in vorexilischer Zeit in einem In- und Miteinander existierten, wurde in nachexilischer Zeit die aktuelle Prophetie von der Tradentenprophetie in eine Randexistenz gedrangt. Armin Lange sieht den Grund fur diesen Verdrangungsprozess in den Erfahrungen der spatvorexilischen und fruhnachexilischen Zeit. Die Bestandigkeit der zionstheologischen Heilsverkundigung trug in den Augen deuteronomistisch gepragter Kreise (so etwa der deuteronomistischen Jeremiaredaktion) eine entscheidende Mitverantwortung fur die Katastrophe von 587 v. Chr. Deshalb wurde die aktuelle Prophetie wahrend des Neubaus des Jerusalemer Tempels 520-515 v. Chr. im ganzen in Frage gestellt und die prophetische Prophetenauslegung trat an ihre Stelle.
