Die Entwicklung der deutschen Hanse war eine Erfolgsgeschichte mit Hindernissen. Erst kriegerische Konflikte, die um reale wirtschaftliche Interessen geführt wurden, schufen die Voraussetzungen für ein politisch wie wirtschaftliches Verbundsystem, das in vielem sehr modern anmutet. Noch heute zeugen zahlreiche Kunstwerke und Bauten von der starken kulturellen Präsenz der Hanse, deren Einflußgebiet von England und Flandern bis nach Polen, ins Baltikum und nach Skandinavien reichte. Daenells Grundlagenbuch liest sich spannend, wie man es von guter Kulturgeschichte nur erwarten kann. Er verfaßte die erste große Erzählung der Hansezeit. Das Buch ist von umso größerem Wert, weil die hansische Forschung um 1906 noch nicht so stark von nationalen Interessen geprägt war. Die enorme Ausdehnung der Hanse in die "Lebensräume" im Osten führte dann unter den Nationalsozialisten dazu, die Geschichte der Hanse politisch zu mißbrauchen und damit zu entwerten.
