Wirtschaft ist ein Konstrukt, das jeden von uns in unterschiedlicher Art tangiert und prägt. Kaum ein Thema polarisiert die Medien so sehr wie dieses. Durch das Leben in einer globalisierten Welt wird Wissen über ökonomische Zusammenhänge und Prozesse relevanter. Folglich ist eine regelrechte Abhängigkeit der Menschen von der Wirtschaft entstanden. Bewohner wirtschaftsstarker Staaten profitieren im Schnitt von einem steigenden Lebensstandard, wohingegen dieser Umstand für Bewohner wirtschaftlich schwacher Länder umgekehrt ist. Es liegen zwei grundlegend unterschiedlichen Wirtschaftsordnungen vor – die Marktwirtschaft und die Planwirtschaft. Beide Wirtschaftsordnungen koexistieren in verschiedenen Ausprägungen. Daher ist es kein Seltenheitsfall, dass wir von der sozialen, liberalen oder freien Marktwirtschaft hören. Aber auch der Begriff des Kapitalismus fällt in diesem Zusammenhang. Profitabel, effizient und kostenoptimiert – nach diesen Kriterien werden heutzutage erfolgreiche Unternehmen gemessen. Aber wie sah das in der Antike zur Zeit des Hellenismus aus? Was lässt sich über den Charakter der antiken Wirtschaft sagen? Ausgehend von dieser Fragestellung entfachte ein 100-jähriger Gelehrtenstreit über den Charakter der antiken Wirtschaft, der auch heute noch nicht abschließend beantwortet ist und nach wie vor Historiker/innen wahrlich diskutieren lässt. Dahingehend möchte ich in der vorliegenden Arbeit die folgende übergeordnete Fragestellung untersuchen. Inwieweit war die antike Wirtschaft zur Zeit des Hellenismus eine Marktwirtschaft?

The famous library of Alexandria, founded around 295 BCE by Ptolemaios I, housed the greatest collection of texts in the ancient world and was a fertile site of Hellenistic scholarship. Rudolf Blum’s landmark study, originally published in German in 1977, argues that Kallimachos of Kyrene was not only the second director of the Alexandrian library but also the inventor of two essential scholarly tools still in use to this day: the library catalog and the “biobibliographical” reference work. Kallimachos expanded the library’s inventory lists into volumes called the Pinakes, which extensively described and categorized each work and became in effect a Greek national bibliography and the source and paradigm for most later bibliographic lists of Greek literature. Though the Pinakes have not survived, Blum attempts a detailed reconstruction of Kallimachos’s inventories and catalogs based on a careful analysis of surviving sources, which are presented here in full translation.
