Der Mönch Wilfrith verfasst eine Chronik über die Ereignisse des Winters 880/881 - eine Geschichte voller Abenteuer, Glauben und Zweifel, Kampf und Liebe. Von Hamburg aus bricht er mit einer Handvoll Gefährten auf und durchquert die Sümpfe, Wälder und Meere jenseits des limes saxoniae und des Danewerk, um seinen verschollenen Lehrer, den Missionar Dietrich, zu suchen. Doch die Reise führt weiter als gedacht und die Zeit drängt, denn der nordelbischen Heimat droht eine unerwartete Gefahr... In seiner 'Hamburgischen Kirchengeschichte' aus dem Jahre 1076 berichtet Adam von Bremen knapp von einem fast vergessenen Abenteuer: '...wo Burwido gegen einen Kämpen der Slawen einen Zweikampf bestand und denselben tötete. Zum Andenken daran ist auch an jene Stelle ein Stein gesetzt.' Dieses Ereignis hat der Autor eingebunden in eine lebendige Geschichte aus dem frühen Mittelalter.
