Mankind's constant struggle with physical as well as mental weaknesses is omnipresent in ancient literature: misconduct, wrongdoing, failure and experiences of contingency are anthropological phenomena. Ancient ethics, epistemology, and natural philosophy have developed different theoretical approaches and guidelines on how to act and how to overcome all kinds of problems. Christian theology, on the other hand, has explained moral failure as a symptom of original sin, comparing decline and destruction to a burden from which mankind is relieved only at the end. The contributions explore how ancient philosophical texts, both pagan and Christian, explain, conceptualize and integrate the myriad manifestations of human fallibility into the different philosophical schools. The focus is on anthropological, ontological and theological concepts that analyse and reflect human fallibility, as well as on the textual and linguistic representation of the phenomenon in ancient literature. Several contributions in the volume explore literary texts that discuss or illustrate the philosophical dimension of fallibility, such as satire's or tragedy's (often exaggerated) depiction of human weakness.

Im Zentrum von Origenes' Arbeit stand stets die Exegese der Hl. Schriften. Zu seinen großen Bibelkommentaren gesellte sich im Lauf der Zeit eine schlichtere Spielart der Bibelauslegung in Gestalt von Predigten, die v.a. das Alte Testament mit den Schlüsseln der Allegorese und der frühchristlichen Typologie ergründen. Nach paulinischer wie philonischer Tradition unterscheidet Origenes dabei zwischen einer wörtlichen und einer übertragenen Auslegung der Hl. Schrift. Letztere kann zwei Ebenen gewinnen, eine moralische, die eher den einzelnen Gläubigen berührt, und eine spirituelle, die den großen Glaubensgeheimnissen gilt. Gerade im Fall seiner (nur in der lateinischen Übertragung Rufins erhaltenen) Predigten zum Buch Genesis ist es spannend zu verfolgen, wie Origenes diese Vielfalt heiliger Erkenntnisse, die von platonisch-stoischer Kosmologie bis hin zur Allegorese von Lots versteinerter Frau reichen, seiner Gemeinde als Lehrer wie Seelsorger zu vermitteln sucht.

The main focus of Origen’s work was exegesis of the Bible ‐ in large commentaries, but also in sermons, which explore in particular the Old Testament allegorically and typologically. Origen distinguishes between a literal and a figurative, moral-spiritual interpretation of the Holy Scripture. Especially in the case of his sermons on the Book of Genesis it is fascinating to follow how Origen as teacher and pastor attempts to convey to the congregation the many different aspects of holy insights, from cosmology to the allegorical interpretation of Lot’s wife being turned into a pillar of salt.
