Diese Aussage gilt nicht nur im Zeitalter des 21. Jahrhunderts, sondern lässt sich sozioökonomisch vielmehr als ein laufender und immer währender Prozess verstehen, der die Menschheit von je her begleitet. Durch Fortschritt in Technik und Wissen änderten sich zweifelsohne Zielvorstellungen, Umwelt sowie die Gesellschaft, im Verlauf der Jahrhunderte.“ Bemerkenswert ist jedoch, in welcher rasanten Art und Weise sich diese Veränderungen in der heutigen Zeit vollziehen. [...] „Durch die Globalisierungsprozesse von Ökonomie und Kommunikation, durch internationalen Handel, neue Medien und steigende Mobilität, entsteht zunehmend eine weltweit verbreitete Kultur ohne nationale Schranken, versehen mit universellen Bilderwelten und gleichen Mustern vor allem dargestellt in der Popularkultur. Der Kosmopolitismus entpuppt sich heute im Zusammenhang mit der skizzierten Entwicklung fast als gesellschaftlicher Trend, obwohl er bereits Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts als herrliche Wunschvorstellung, welche jedoch für den Menschen zu groß und nicht fassbar ist, skizziert wurde. Aktuell wird die Tendenz der kulturellen und zunehmend vernetzten Globalisierung zuspitzend als McDonaldisierung bezeichnet. Da der Ursprung einer sich ausbreitenden Marktwirtschaft und Demokratisierung in den USA liegt, wird für diese Ausbreitung westlicher Konsum- und Kulturwaren oft synonym von Amerikanisierung gesprochen. In der Tat verhält es sich so, dass im schweizerischen Mittelland die gleichen Serien gesehen werden wie in New York, Tokio oder Bombay. Millionen von Barbiepuppen propagieren das Schönheits- und Lebensideal der weißen US-amerikanischen Mittelschicht. McDonalds gibt es nun nahezu überall auf der Welt, wie auch überall Blue Jeans getragen werden, Coca Cola getrunken und Marlboro geraucht wird. All diese Markenzeichen der westlichen Welt, welche auf dem gesamten Erdball bekannt sind, gelten gemeinhin als Symbole für Wohlstand, Frieden, zunehmende Vernetzung und eine gemeinsame Kultur. Dieser Deckmantel lässt die Globalisierung als eine makellose Schönheit daherkommen, welche der gesamten Menschheit zu Gute kommt. Die Welt wird kleiner, freier und Grenzen verwischen zusehens, sowohl auf den Landkarten als auch in den Köpfen.

Bislang bedeutet kulturelle Globalisierung die Diffusion der in Europa entstandenen und in Nordamerika weiterentwickelten Kultur der Moderne, von grundlegenden Werten wie Rationalität und Individualität, aber auch von Wissenschaftsverständnis und populärer Kultur. Bei näherer Betrachtung zeigen sich jedoch Vorgänge wie Transformation und Rekombination, Widerspruch und Widerstand in den übrigen Teilen der Welt und Selbstreflexion wie Selbstkorrektur in der "Ersten Welt". Gleichzeitig wird deutlich, daß die großen Probleme der Zukunft "Weltprobleme" sind, die nur über einen globalen Konsens, den Kern einer "Weltkultur", und den Aufbau weltweit akzeptierter Institutionen, den Repräsentanten einer "Weltgesellschaft", eingedämmt oder vielleicht sogar gelöst werden können.
