Am Beispiel eines der führenden Bergbauunternehmen der DDR - der Sowjetisch-Deutschen Aktiengesellschaft Wismut - wird die künstlerisch-ästhetische Bildung und Erziehung der Menschen im Staatssozialismus untersucht. Schlagworte wie «Bitterfelder Weg», «Laienkunst» oder «Arbeiterfestspiele» bezeichneten in der DDR vermeintliche Wege, intellektuelle Schichten mit den «einfachen» Menschen zu vereinen. Der Künstler, ganz gleich in welchem Bereich er agierte, sollte sich seiner Verantwortung, im Dienste des wortwörtlich zu verstehenden «Arbeiter- und Bauernstaates» zu handeln, stets bewusst sein. Dessen Engagement in Betrieben, Zirkeln, Berufs- und Fachschulen sowie an den Akademien schien von unschätzbarer Bedeutung dafür zu sein, die sozialistische Kunst und Kultur in den Alltag zu integrieren und das Ideal von einem «sozialistischen Menschen» im Leben zu formen. Welche tragende Rolle kam hierbei der Wismut als Förderer und Auftraggeber von bildender Kunst zu? In diesem Zusammenhang ist das «sozialistische Menschenbild als zentrale Kategorie des sozialistischen Realismus» und seine auf diese Weise staatlich verordnete Vermittlung ein Gegenstand kunsthistorischer Überlegungen. Geeignete Bildbeispiele unterschiedlichen Entstehungsdatums aus der Kunstsammlung der Wismut werden hierzu mit Werken, welche die DDR-Malerei im Wesentlichen mit prägten, vergleichend betrachtet. Das Buch geht über kunsthistorische Betrachtungen hinaus. Soziologische Fragen zur öffentlichen Stellung der Künstlerpersönlichkeit in der DDR werden ebenso angesprochen wie kunst- und kulturpolitische Hintergründe und die Auswertung rezeptionsgeschichtlicher Dokumente.
