Die Weimarer Inkunabelsammlung mit ihren 427 Wiegendrucken, die in diesem Katalog vollstandig beschrieben wird, umfasst Texte der Antike, Bibeln, theologische und philosophische Werke, Chroniken und historische Erzahlungen, juristische, mathematische und medizinische Werke. Besonders hervorzuheben sind zwei sehr seltene Blockbucher, die Bibeldrucke des Nurnberger Druckers Anton Koberger, Bernhard von Breidenbachs Pilgerreise ins Heilige Land (1486), Sebastian Brants Narrenschiff (1494) sowie zahlreiche illustrierte Textausgaben antiker Schriftsteller. Uberraschend dicht ist auch der Bestand an griechischen Drucken. Die Inkunabeln wurden seit dem 17. Jahrhundert gezielt erworben, zum Teil auch im Rahmen grosserer Nachlasse angekauft, und es handelt sich nicht um Sakularisationsgut, sondern um Stucke, an denen den Weimarer Fursten und ihren Bibliothekaren besonders gelegen war.

Incunabula of the Low Countries (ILC) is a census of fifteenth-century books printed in the area of the present-day Netherlands and Belgium. It lists 2,229 editions in more than 14,300 copies preserved in hundreds of libraries, museums, and archives all over the world, but mainly in Europe and the USA. The entries for this census have been derived from the Incunabula Short Title Catalogue (ISTC), the database of incunabula compiled at the British Library. They combine research on Low Countries incunabula carried out by Gerard van Thienen, curator at the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague, with data assembled by ISTC form other sources. ISTC entries were further edited, indexed and prepared for publication by John Goldfinch at the British Library. Campbell's Annales of 1874, the first bibliography of incunabula printed in the Low Countries with 1794 entries, was followed by a number of supplements of increasing complexity, the most extensive being published by M.E. Kronenberg in 1956. All the former additions and emendations, together with additions not otherwise listed before are now brought together and included in one sequence in ILC.

Excerpt from Die Inkunabeln Nassauischer Bibliotheken Die Ergebnisse der ebenso methodisch wie sorgfältig durchgeführten Typenvergleichung der Inlmnabeln des British Museum und der Oxford Library, wie sie in Proctors Index vorliegen, haben die Inkunabelnforschung geradezu auf eine neue Basis gestellt. Ihr nächstes weiteres Ziel wird die Feststellung der ihren Drucken nach zwar nntersohiedenen, ihrem Namen nach aber noch unbekannten Drucker sein müssen. Die Lösung dieser Aufgabe wird wesent lich Sache einer von der Lokalforschung ausgehenden mon0gmphischen Behand lung der einzelnen Drucker und Druckorte sein. Die Vorbedingung fürsolche Einzelforschungen bleibt aber immer die Verzeichnrmg und Nachweisung des überall zerstrmxten Inkunabelnmaterials. Dass dies in Deutschland in derselben einheitlichen Weise geschehen wird, wie jetzt in Frankreich durch den Pelle chetschen Katalog, ist mindestens zweifelhafl. Denn abgesehen von den grösseren Schwierigkeiten, welche einem solchen Unternehmen bei uns aus ver schiedenen unschwer zu erkennenden Gründen entgegenstehen, scheint gegen wattig die Meinung, dass man das letzte Ziel der Inkunabelniorschmrg' die Herstellung eines Gesamtkatalogs aller Drucke des filnfzehrflen Jahr hunderts, direkt erstmben müsse und könne, in den interessierten Kreisen die vorherrschende zu sein. Meines Erachtens sollte man freilich in Deutschland sowie in den anderen beteiligten Ländern das Beispiel Frankreichs nachahmen. Es wäre dies eine erreichbare Aufgabe, welche dadurch, dass sie der Spezial fomchung das Material an die Hand gäbe, um die fiir einen Gesamtkatalog erforderlichen Vorarbeiten erfolgreicher und in grösserem Massstabe als bisher in Ann nehmen zu können, die Herstellung des letzteren am sichersten in die Wege leiten würde. Denn ein neuer Hain, welcher in der Verzeichnung der einzelnen Drucke in mancher Hinsicht gewiss kürzer und präziser als die oft allzu umständliche Beschreibungen erfordernden lnkunabelnkataloge von heutzutage sein könnte, müsste doch nicht allein über die noch unbekannten Drucke, sondern auch über die noch unbekannten Drucker die nötige Aus kunft geben. Dass dies aber bei dem heutigen Stande der Inkunabelnforschung in befriedigender Weise geschehen könne, wird man nicht behaupten wollen.
