Alte deutsche Städte wie NÜfnberg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Lübeck u. a. sind in der Welt berühmt, weil sie noch ein deutliches Bild dieser heute verschwundenen Zustände bieten - richtiger gesagt: dieser Zustände, die in der heutigen Gesellschaft nicht mehr die herrschenden, sondern nur noch Überreste einer untergegangenen Zeit sind. Von weither kommen die Menschen gereist, um solche Städte zu besichtigen. Meist wissen sie selbst nicht genau, was ihnen daran so gefällt. Wahrscheinlich ist es bei den meisten die unbe wul~te Sehnsucht zurück nach einer Zeit, die zwar gewiß nicht so idyllisch war, wie man sie sich heute gern vorstellt, - denn in all diesen alten Städten ist in ihrer Blütezeit viel Blut geflossen ... aber doch nach einer Zeit, die nicht den wilden Konkurrenzkampf des entfesselten Kapitalismus kannte. Wo so Giebel neben Giebel steht, ahnt man das wohl habende oder auch bescheidene, aber wirtschaftlich sichere Leben, getragen und gehegt von der Zunft oder der Kaufmannsgilde, die daftir sorgen, daß jeder seine "Nahrung" bekommt, als Geselle, als Meister, als Ratsherr. Bürgerliche Romantik, ein Zurücksehnen nach "besseren" Zeiten, wohl auch ein Stück Angstgefühl vor den Problemen der Gegenwart und Zukunft, deren Bewältigung sich ein Kleinbürgergemüt nicht vorstellen kann, dazu sicher noch ein Blick durch die rosenrote Brille - kurz: Illusionen und die Selbsttäuschungen einer rückwärtsgewandten unter gehenden Klasse, das ist es, was solche alten Städte so populär macht

Politikvermittlung findet heute primär unter den Bedingungen der elektronischen Medien statt. Was in Wort und Bild als politische Wirklichkeit dargestellt wird, geht aus dem Zusammenspiel der journalistischen Inszenierung und der Selbstinszenierung politischer Akteure hervor. In der vorliegenden Studie sind folgende Fragen erörtert worden: Welche Strategien benutzen Journalisten bei der Inszenierung politischer Themen in Wort und Bild? Wie verhalten sich diese unterschiedlichen theatralischen Diskursformen zu dem normativen Anspruch der Massenmedien auf Information und Argumentation? In qualitativen Analysen politischer Informationssendungen hat sich gezeigt, daß Beiträge, die die Aufmerksamkeit der Zuschauer durch aktionsreiche, emotional ansprechende und visuell reizvolle Inszenierungsformen in Regie nehmen, innerhalb dieses dramaturgisch lebhaften Aufbaus gelegentlich eine Vielzahl von Hintergrundinformationen und Strukturen transportieren und zu einem der Komplexität der Sache angemessenen Bild verdichten können.

Interest in sensory atmospheres and architectural and urban ambiances has been growing for over 30 years. A key figure in this field is acclaimed German philosopher Gernot Böhme whose influential conception of what atmospheres are and how they function has been only partially available to the English-speaking public. This translation of key essays along with an original introduction charts the development of Gernot Böhme's philosophy of atmospheres and how it can be applied in various contexts such as scenography, commodity aesthetics, advertising, architecture, design, and art. The phenomenological analysis of atmospheres has proved very fruitful and its most important, and successful, application has been within aesthetics. The material background of this success may be seen in the ubiquitous aestheticization of our lifeworld, or from another perspective, of the staging of everything, every event and performance. The theory of atmospheres becoming an aesthetic theory thus reveals the theatrical, not to say manipulative, character of politics, commerce, of the event-society. But, taken as a positive theory of certain phenomena, it offers new perspectives on architecture, design, and art. It made the spatial and the experience of space and places a central subject and hence rehabilitated the ephemeral in the arts. Taking its numerous impacts in many fields together, it initiated a new humanism: the individual as a living person and his or her perspective are taken seriously, and this fosters the ongoing democratization of culture, in particular the possibility for everybody to participate in art and its works.

Originally published in Italian in 2010, this book is the first to address the theory of atmospheres in a thorough and systematic way. It examines the role of atmospheres in daily life, and defines their main characteristics. Outlining the typical phenomenological situations in which we experience atmospheres, it assesses their impact on contemporary aesthetics. It puts forward a philosophical approach which systematises a constellation of affects and climates, finds patterns in the emotional tones of different spaces (affordances) and assesses their impact on the felt body. It also critically discusses the spatial turn invoked by several of the social sciences, and argues that there is a need for a non-psychologistic rethinking of the philosophy of emotions. It provides a history of the term 'atmosphere' and of the concepts anticipating its meaning (genius loci, aura, Stimmung, numinous, emotional design and ambiance), and examines the main ontological characteristics of atmospheres and their principal phenomenological characteristics. It concludes by showing how atmospheres affect our emotions, our bodies' reactions, our state of mind and, as a result, our behaviour and judgments. Griffero assesses how atmospheres are more effective than we have been rationally willing to admit, and to what extent traditional aesthetics, unilaterally oriented towards art, has underestimated this truth.

Since then, much has been made of a supposed “Americanization” of European consumer societies—in Germany and elsewhere. Arguing against these foggy notions, Jan L. Logemann takes a comparative look at the development of postwar mass consumption in West Germany and the United States and the emergence of discrete consumer modernities. In Trams or Tailfins?, Logemann explains how the decisions made at this crucial time helped to define both of these economic superpowers in the second half of the twentieth century. While Americans splurged on private cars and bought goods on credit in suburban shopping malls, Germans rebuilt public transit and developed pedestrian shopping streets in their city centers—choices that continue to shape the quality and character of life decades later. Outlining the abundant differences in the structures of consumer society, consumer habits, and the role of public consumption in these countries, Logemann reveals the many subtle ways that the spheres of government, society, and physical space define how we live.
