Wenn es schwierig ist, unter den grossen Geam schwersten auf unsere Schultern druckt, so ist bei der Pflanze kein Zweifel daruber moglich: es ist das Gesetz, das sie von ihrer Geburt bis zum Tode zur Unbeweglichkeit verdammt. Darum weiss sie auch besser als wir, die wir unsere Krafte zer Splittern, wogegen sie sich zuerst aufzulehnen hat. Und die Energie ihrer fixen Idee, die aus dem Dunkel ihrer Wurzeln emporsteigt, um sich im Licht ihrer Blute zu organisieren und zu entfalten, bietet ein unvergleichliches Schauspiel. Sie ist ganz auf ein einziges Ziel eingestellt: dem Schicksal ihrer Wurzel durch ihre Blute zu entrinnen, das druckende und dustere Gesetz zu ubertreten und seiner zu spotten, sich freizumachen und die enge Sphare zu zerbrechen, sich Flugel zu erfinden oder sie an zulocken, so weit wie moglich zu entkommen, den Raum zu besiegen, worin das Schicksal sie gefan gen halt, sich einem andern Naturreich zu nahern, in eine lebende und bewegte Welt einzudringen Und dass ihr das gelingt, ist das nicht ebenso er staunlich, als ob wir uns zusammentaten, um ausser halb der Zeitschranken zu leben, die ein anderes Geschick uns gezogen hat, oder uns in eine Welt aufzuschwingen, die von den lastendsten Gesetzen der Materie befreit ist? Wie wir sehen werden, gibt die Pflanze dem Menschen ein wundersmnes Beispiel der Unbotmassigkeit, des Mutes, der Be harrlichkeit und Erfindsamkeit. Hatten wir nur halb so viel Energie aufgewandt, wie irgend eine kleine Gartenblume, um den Druck mehrerer schwerer Notwendigkeiten, z. B.
