Inhaltsangabe:Zusammenfassung: Die Arbeit untersucht die Wahrnehmung der US-Vietnampolitik in westdeutschen Zeitungen und zieht zum Vergleich die britische Perspektive hinzu. Sie konzentriert sich dabei darauf, wie westdeutsche und britische Journalisten zwischen 1964 und 1969 die Frage beantworten: Warum führen die USA Krieg in Vietnam? Der Krieg in dem südostasiatischen Land war ein bedeutendes Ereignis in der westdeutsch-amerikanischen Beziehungsgeschichte. Je stärker das militärische Engagement der USA wurde, desto tiefer wurde in der westdeutschen Öffentlichkeit die Spaltung zwischen Befürwortern und Gegnern des Kriegs. Obwohl die Sechziger in der Bundesrepublik wie in Großbritannien eine Zeit der Expansion audiovisueller Medien waren, konzentriert sich diese Untersuchung auf Zeitungen, denn sie hatten als Leitmedien oder Meinungsführermedien einen hohen Einfluss auf die anderen Medien und auf die Gesellschaft. (Wilke, Jürgen 1999) Diese Arbeit fragt sowohl nach expliziten Erklärungsversuchen deutscher Zeitungen für die Intervention in Vietnam als auch nach unausgesprochenen Annahmen über die Beweggründe der Vereinigten Staaten. Dabei wird auch auf die Erkenntnisse anderer wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen zurückgegriffen, insbesondere der Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaften sowie der sozialwissenschaftlichen Kognitionsforschung. Neben der Suche westdeutscher und britischer Journalisten nach fest umrissenen, eindeutig fassbaren und explizit angesprochenen Gründen für das amerikanische Vorgehen als Beispiel sei die Domino-Theorie genannt wird das manifest oder latent aufgebaute Image der USA und ihrer Bürger im Zentrum der Arbeit stehen, sofern dieses in Zusammenhang mit der Intervention in Vietnam gebracht wird. Es geht hierbei also auch um Erklärungsversuche nach folgendem Schema: Die Amerikaner betreiben diese Politik und keine andere, weil ihnen bestimmte Verhaltensweisen und Charaktereigenschaften zu eigen sind. Die leitende Frage, nämlich die nach westdeutschen und britischen Antworten auf die Frage Warum führen die USA Krieg in Vietnam? , schließt weitere ein: Welchen Quellen wird am meisten Vertrauen geschenkt? Wie verändern sich die Erklärungsmuster im Kriegsverlauf? Wie unterscheiden sich die Zeitungen in den vorgebrachten Ansätzen voneinander? Some will be shocked to find out that the United States and Ho Chi Minh, our nemesis for much of the Vietnam War, were once allies. Indeed, during the last year of World War II, American spies in Indochina found themselves working closely with Ho Chi Minh and other anti-colonial factions-compelled by circumstances to fight together against the Japanese. Dixee Bartholomew-Feis reveals how this relationship emerged and operated and how it impacted Vietnam's struggle for independence. The men of General William Donovan's newly-formed Office of Strategic Services closely collaborated with communist groups in both Europe and Asia against the Axis enemies. In Vietnam, this meant that OSS officers worked with Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh, whose ultimate aim was to rid the region of all imperialist powers, not just the Japanese. Ho, for his part, did whatever he could to encourage the OSS's negative view of the French, who were desperate to regain their colony. Revealing details not previously known about their covert operations, Bartholomew-Feis chronicles the exploits of these allies as they developed their network of informants, sabotaged the Japanese occupation's infrastructure, conducted guerrilla operations, and searched for downed American fliers and Allied POWs. Although the OSS did not bring Ho Chi Minh to power, Bartholomew-Feis shows that its apparent support for the Viet Minh played a significant symbolic role in helping them fill the power vacuum left in the wake of Japan's surrender. Her study also hints that, had America continued to champion the anti-colonials and their quest for independence, rather than caving in to the French, we might have been spared our long and very lethal war in Vietnam. Based partly on interviews with surviving OSS agents who served in Vietnam, Bartholomew-Feis's engaging narrative and compelling insights speak to the yearnings of an oppressed people-and remind us that history does indeed make strange bedfellows.

Using recently released archival materials from the United States and Europe, Replacing France: The Origins of American Intervention in Vietnam explains how and why the United States came to assume control as the dominant western power in Vietnam during the 1950s. Acting on their conviction that American methods had a better chance of building a stable, noncommunist South Vietnamese nation, Eisenhower administration officials systematically ejected French military, economic, political, bureaucratic, and cultural institutions from Vietnam. Kathryn C. Statler examines diplomatic maneuvers in Paris, Washington, London, and Saigon to detail how Western alliance members sought to transform South Vietnam into a modern, westernized, and democratic ally but ultimately failed to counter the Communist threat. Abetted by South Vietnamese prime minister Ngo Dinh Diem, Americans in Washington, D.C., and Saigon undermined their French counterparts at every turn, resulting in the disappearance of a French presence by the time Kennedy assumed office. Although the United States ultimately replaced France in South Vietnam, efforts to build South Vietnam into a nation failed. This is the second volume in a series of chronological histories prepared by the Marine Corps History and Museums Division to cover the entire span of Marine Corps involvement in the Vietnam War.
