Die Beiträge des Bandes widmen sich der Verbindung von kriegerischem und unternehmerischem Handeln im Spätmittelalter und in der Frühen Neuzeit. Das Kriegsunternehmertum wird dabei als eine langlebige, Raum und Epochen übergreifende Erscheinung betrachtet, die keineswegs nur ein "Übergangsphänomen" im Rahmen einer linearen Entwicklung von "mittelalterlichen Gefolgschaftsheeren" zu "frühstaatlichen Dienst- und Berufsheeren" war. Untersucht wird, unter welchen politischen, sozialen, technologischen und ökonomischen Bedingungen es entstehen, sich etablieren und entfalten, sodann aber auch wieder an Bedeutung verlieren konnte - ohne freilich je ganz verschwunden zu sein. Als gemeinsame analytische Kategorie wird dafür der Begriff der Kapitalisierung in einem weiten Bedeutungsspektrum herangezogen.

“Money, money, and more money.” In the eyes of early modern warlords, these were the three essential prerequisites for waging war. The transnational studies presented here describe and explain how belligerent powers did indeed rely on thriving markets where military entrepreneurs provided mercenaries, weapons, money, credit, food, expertise, and other services. In a fresh and comprehensive examination of pre-national military entrepreneurship – its actors, structures and economic logic – this volume shows how readily business relationships for supplying armies in the 17th and 18th centuries crossed territorial and confessional boundaries. By outlining and explicating early modern military entrepreneurial fields of action, this new transnational perspective transcends the limits of national historical approaches to the business of war. Small power diplomacy in seventeenth century Europe War, State and Society in Liège is a fascinating case study of the consequences of war in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and touches upon wider issues in early modern history, such as small power diplomacy in the seventeenth century and during the Nine Years’ War. For centuries, the small semi-independent Holy Roman Principality of Liège succeeded in preserving a non-belligerent role in European conflicts. During the Nine Years’ War (1688–1697), however, Liège’s leaders had to abolish the practice of neutrality. For the first time in its early modern history, the Prince-Bishopric had to raise a regular army, reconstruct ruined defence structures, and supply army contributions in both money and material. The issues under discussion in War, State and Society in Liège offer the reader insight into how Liège politically protected its powerful institutions and how the local elite tried to influence the interplay between domestic and external diplomatic relationships.

Der Dreißigjährige Krieg gilt als die größte Katastrophe und traumatischste Kriegserfahrung der deutschen Geschichte vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Tatsächlich litten in vielen Regionen große Teile der Bevölkerung schwer unter den Kriegshandlungen und ihren Folgen. Der Band beschäftigt sich mit dem bayerisch-ligistischen Kriegskommissariat im Dreißigjährigen Krieg, welches das bis dahin weitestgehend autonome Söldnerheer zu kontrollieren hatte und daher als beispielhaftes Forschungsobjekt fürstlicher Macht dieser Epoche gilt. Beschränkte sich die Forschung bisher auf die normative Ebene, nähert sich Keita Saito durch die Auswertung von Feldakten und Privatkorrespondenzen sowie durch die Anwendung der Methoden der Prosopographie und Netzwerkanalyse dem Thema multiperspektivisch. Auf diese Weise zeigt er das Zusammenspiel und die Verflechtung verschiedener Kompetenzen und Funktionen des sozialen Netzwerks für die Amtsausführung des Kriegskommissariats auf und leistet einen Beitrag zur Erfassung der Vielfältigkeit frühneuzeitlicher Herrschaftssysteme. The Commissary of War in the Thirty Years' War presents itself as an object worthy of investigation with regard to its role of controlling free mercenary troops and thus enhancing power of princes in the Early Modern Europe. Focusing on the Bavarian Army, one of the best organized military forces in this era, this work sheds light on the activities of the commissaries that had been observed only from the normative perspective in hitherto studies. Analysis of primary sources such as military administration documents and private correspondence will show the entanglement of various competences and the functions of the social network for the commission holders in service. As a result, this work provides proof of the complexity of rulership in the Early Modern Europe.
